What semiconductors and ICs do UAE buyers order?
Semiconductors are components made from silicon or similar materials that switch, amplify or process signals; integrated circuits (ICs) put many of those functions on one chip. They are the active part of electronic components in the UAE, and most orders are either BOM purchases by local assemblers or exact replacements for failed parts in industrial equipment.
| Device type | Typical UAE use | What to specify |
|---|---|---|
| Diodes, rectifiers and thyristors | Power supplies, rectifier bridges, soft starters | Voltage and current rating, recovery time, package |
| MOSFETs and bipolar transistors | Switching stages, DC converters, driver boards | Voltage, on resistance or gain, package, thermal resistance |
| IGBT and IPM power modules | Variable frequency drives, servo drives, UPS inverters, solar inverters | Voltage class, current rating, module outline, gate drive needs |
| Microcontrollers and processors | Controller boards, meters, building automation devices | Exact part number, memory size, package, temperature grade, firmware |
| Memory (EEPROM, flash, RAM) | Data logging, configuration storage, displays | Density, interface, speed, package |
| Analog, power management and interface ICs | Regulators, op amps, RS-485 and CAN transceivers | Function, supply range, package, grade |
| Optoelectronics and optocouplers | Signal isolation, indicators, sensors | Isolation voltage, current transfer ratio, package |
In plant maintenance, the most requested power devices are IGBT modules. Mitsubishi Electric describes IGBT and IPM modules as indispensable devices for industrial inverters and servo drives, and Mitsubishi Electric's power semiconductor range sits alongside its own drives. Fuji Electric's IGBT modules target industrial equipment, uninterruptible power supplies and power conditioning systems. When a drive or UPS fails, order the module the equipment maker specifies, not a look-alike. For the finished equipment itself, see power electronics such as UPS and power supplies.
Chips rarely work alone: they sit on boards with capacitors, resistors and inductors and are often built into product by PCB assembly services in the UAE.
How do you order the exact semiconductor part number?
Order by the full manufacturer part number, including every suffix, because the suffix usually encodes the package, temperature grade, packing and sometimes the silicon revision. Two parts that share the same base number can differ in pinout, operating range or qualification.
- Package: the same die can come in several packages that do not fit the same footprint.
- Packing: tape and reel, cut tape, tube or tray changes price and suits different assembly methods.
- Grade: commercial, industrial and automotive grades of one device have different operating ranges. Each maker defines its own, so read the datasheet rather than assuming a range.
- Programmed parts: microcontrollers and memory for a repair may need the equipment maker's firmware; a blank chip will not restore the board.
- Cross references: second-source equivalents exist for many discretes and regulators, but have an engineer check the datasheet before approving one.
How do UAE heat and humidity affect semiconductors?
Heat is the main stress on semiconductors in UAE service: junction temperature rises with enclosure temperature, and higher temperatures shorten device life. Choosing an adequate temperature grade and keeping enclosures cool does more for reliability than any other step.
Panels on rooftops, in plant rooms or in outdoor kiosks across Abu Dhabi, Dubai and the northern emirates can run well above room temperature in summer. For those, select industrial or extended temperature parts with margin. AEC-Q100, published by the Automotive Electronics Council and described by Renesas as a failure mechanism based stress test qualification for packaged ICs, is a useful marker of a device tested for harsh conditions even outside vehicles. Power modules face repeated heating and cooling with load; Fuji Electric points to improved power cycling capability in its 7th generation modules, which is the property to compare for drives that start and stop often.
Humidity is mostly a storage and assembly issue for unsoldered chips, covered on the parent page. Once fitted, coastal salt air and condensation attack the board around the chip, so coating and enclosure sealing matter in Dubai, Sharjah and Fujairah.
Which standards and rules apply to semiconductors in the UAE?
Loose semiconductors are not usually registered with MoIAT on their own, but the equipment and spare parts they go into fall under UAE RoHS, so a manufacturer's RoHS declaration for each device supports the OEM's registration. Reliability and lifecycle standards are industry documents set by contract. Status as of 2026:
| Requirement | What it covers | Body |
|---|---|---|
| UAE RoHS, Cabinet Decision No. 10 of 2017 | Restricted substances in electrical and electronic equipment and spare parts | MoIAT |
| AEC-Q100 | Stress test qualification of packaged integrated circuits | Automotive Electronics Council (voluntary) |
| AEC-Q101 | Stress test qualification of discrete semiconductors | Automotive Electronics Council (voluntary) |
| JEDEC JESD48 | Product discontinuance notices from manufacturers | JEDEC (industry practice) |
| SAE AS6081 | Counterfeit avoidance by open market distributors | SAE International (voluntary) |
For how MoIAT registration works for the finished product, read the guide to ECAS and EQM conformity in the UAE.
How should UAE buyers handle end-of-life and obsolete chips?
Plan for obsolescence before it happens: track the lifecycle status of every critical chip and act on discontinuance notices with a last time buy or a redesign. Industrial plant in the UAE often runs for decades, far longer than many chips stay in production.
Manufacturers announce discontinuations with a product discontinuance notice. NXP, for example, issues its notices in line with its own policy and JEDEC JESD48, giving a last time buy date (the last day it accepts orders) and a last time delivery date (the last day it ships). On that notice NXP states a nine month last order period for sole source parts and a twelve month delivery period; other makers set their own terms, so read each notice.
- Ask your franchised distributor to send change and discontinuance notices for the parts on your BOM.
- Estimate lifetime spares demand and place the last time buy before the cut-off.
- Store bought quantities sealed and dry, in a climate controlled store rather than a hot warehouse.
- If the open market is the only option later, apply the counterfeit checks on the parent page and consider independent testing.
What affects the price and lead time of semiconductors in the UAE?
Semiconductor prices depend on quantity, channel and supply conditions; lead time depends on whether a franchised distributor holds stock or the part must come from the factory.
- Quantity and packing: full reels and trays carry lower unit prices than cut tape or single pieces.
- Allocation: when fabs are short of capacity, factory lead times stretch and open market prices rise.
- Lifecycle: parts after their last time buy are found only on the open market, at a premium and with more risk.
- Power modules: large IGBT modules are high-value items often ordered against a specific drive or UPS model and may not be stocked locally.
- Freight: small orders fly in by courier through Dubai and Abu Dhabi airports; bulk orders move through Jebel Ali.
Send suppliers the full part numbers, quantities and acceptable alternates. For switching parts that are not chips, see relays and contactors.
