What is packaging printing and which formats do UAE brands buy?

Packaging printing is the print and conversion of the pack itself, as opposed to brochures or stationery. It sits within printing and paper suppliers in the UAE, and the buyer is usually a packaging technologist or procurement manager at a filling plant who needs the same colours, barcode and dimensions on every repeat order.

The format decides the print process, and the process decides tooling cost, minimum run and colour behaviour.

The substrate often comes from separate suppliers: paperboard and kraft for cartons, plastic films for flexible packs, and printing inks for packaging presses. For unprinted or plain transit boxes, see corrugated boxes and cartons. Brochures and inserts usually go to commercial printing services instead.

How do you specify colour, barcodes and food safety for UAE packaging print?

Specify packaging print against measurable targets: a colour standard with tolerances, a barcode grade checked with a verifier, and ink documentation for food packs. Without them, repeat orders drift and disputes have no reference.

Colour

The ISO 12647 series sets process control for printing; Part 6 covers flexographic printing, including labels, boxes and flexible packages, and Part 2 covers offset. Ask the printer which part and characterisation data it prints to, how it proofs, and the spot colour tolerance it accepts. Approve a press proof on the first run and keep a signed master sample.

Barcodes

GS1 advises measuring printed barcode quality with a verifier compliant with ISO/IEC 15426-1 for linear symbols or 15426-2 for 2D symbols, which gives an overall grade. The minimum grade depends on the application and is set in the Symbol Specification Tables of the GS1 General Specifications. Ask for a verification report on each new artwork and on reprints after plate changes.

Inks and food packs

EuPIA, the European printing ink association, publishes guidance on inks for food contact materials, including a guidance note for inks on the non-food-contact surface of food packaging, and a model statement of composition that ink makers give converters listing potential migrants. UAE brand owners commonly ask their printer for these documents and for low-migration ink series on food jobs.

UAE conditions

Labels on chilled water and dairy bottles meet condensation in humid filling halls, so adhesive choice must be tested on the real container. Film stored in hot Jebel Ali or Sharjah warehouses can lose surface treatment and curl, so print and laminate close to use.

Which certifications and rules apply to packaging printers in the UAE?

As of 2026, UAE packaging printers need a trade licence for the activity, and food and pharma customers usually require a packaging hygiene certification and documented ink compliance. Media licensing applies to printing media content, which ordinary product packaging normally is not, but check if you print publications too.

BRCGS published Packaging Materials Issue 7 in October 2024, and audits from 28 April 2025 are against Issue 7, according to certification body LRQA; the issue strengthened hazard analysis and product safety culture. Khaleej Times reported in June 2025 that printing of media content needs a licence from the UAE Media Council or the relevant authority under the rules in force from 29 May 2025. For Arabic label content and food claims, check with your regulatory team and the emirate food authority.

Who supplies packaging printing in the UAE?

UAE packaging print comes from carton printers, label converters and flexible packaging plants, concentrated in Dubai, Sharjah, Ajman and the free zones near Jebel Ali and KIZAD, plus regional groups shipping from neighbouring countries. Audit capability before price: press type, inspection, certification and repeat colour control.

The quality of a converter depends partly on its equipment. Brands carried on ListGCC that serve the UAE packaging print chain include BST eltromat for web guiding and 100% print inspection, Prati for label inspection slitter rewinders, API Foilmakers for hot and cold stamping foils on premium cartons, and Pillar Technologies for corona treaters that prepare films for ink. Ask a prospective printer which inspection system runs on your job. Presses are covered under flexographic printing machines. If you are weighing in-house printing or coding, read the packaging machinery buying guide for GCC food plants, and vet converters with the industrial supplier sourcing guide.

What drives packaging printing price and lead time in the UAE?

Price is set by substrate, tooling, run length and finishing; lead time by artwork approval, substrate stock and press capacity.

  • Tooling: flexo plates, gravure cylinders and cutting dies are one-off costs; gravure suits long runs, digital suits short or versioned runs.
  • Substrate: board and film follow imported mill prices and freight.
  • Embellishment: foils, embossing, special varnishes and windows add machine passes.
  • Compliance: low-migration inks, 100% inspection and barcode verification add cost and protect against recalls.
  • Season: Ramadan, Eid and national day promotions fill press schedules, so book artwork and capacity early.

To compare several converters on one specification, post your packaging printing requirement with format, dimensions, quantities and artwork status.

Frequently Asked Questions — Packaging Printing

What does packaging printing include in the UAE?
Packaging printing in the UAE covers printed folding cartons, self-adhesive labels, flexible laminates and pouches, shrink sleeves and printed corrugated boxes. It serves food, beverage, personal care and pharmaceutical brands that need consistent colours, barcodes and dimensions on every order.
Which print process is best for labels in the UAE?
Narrow-web flexo suits long label runs for water, juice and dairy brands in the UAE, while digital printing suits short runs, seasonal versions and many SKUs. Many UAE label converters run both, so ask which process gives the lowest cost at your quantity.
How do I check barcode quality on printed packaging?
GS1 recommends a barcode verifier compliant with ISO/IEC 15426-1 or 15426-2, which grades the printed symbol. Minimum grades depend on the application and are listed in the GS1 General Specifications. Ask your UAE packaging printer for a verification report on each artwork.
What ink documents should a UAE food packaging printer provide?
A UAE food packaging printer should provide the ink supplier statement of composition, following EuPIA guidance, confirmation of low-migration ink series where needed, and the converter migration assessment. These documents let brand owners show the printed pack is suitable for food.
Is BRCGS certification needed for packaging printers in the UAE?
BRCGS Packaging Materials certification is not a UAE legal requirement, but many food and consumer brands require it from packaging printers. Issue 7 was published in October 2024 and audits have been against it since April 2025. Ask for the current certificate.
How long does packaging printing take in the UAE?
UAE packaging print lead time depends on artwork approval, tooling and substrate stock. Repeat jobs on stocked board or film move fastest; new flexible packaging with gravure cylinders or special laminates takes longer. Ramadan and Eid peaks also lengthen queues.
Do UAE packaging printers need a Media Council licence?
UAE printers need a trade licence for printing. Under rules in force from May 2025, printing of media content requires a licence or permit from the UAE Media Council or the relevant authority. Check with the printer and authority whether your print job falls within that scope as of 2026.
