How accurate does a measuring tool need to be on a UAE site?
Choose accuracy to suit the tolerance of the job and the temperature of the day, not the highest resolution available. A digital caliper that shows 0.01 mm does not give 0.01 mm accuracy, and a steel tape in the sun changes length.
Resolution, accuracy and class
Resolution is the smallest number the display shows; accuracy is how close it is to the true value. ISO 13385-1 sets out the design and metrological characteristics of callipers, both analogue and digital. For tapes, the accuracy class marked on the blade matters more than the brand, so check it on the data sheet against the tolerance your drawing allows. Tape tolerances are stated at 20 degrees Celsius under a specified pull, so expect larger deviations on a 45 degree steel structure in August.
Heat and sun
Steel expands with temperature, so measure long steel members in the same conditions you will assemble in. Lasers are harder to see in direct UAE sunlight; check the range with the receiver on a rotary laser and use a target card for a distance meter outdoors. Keep digital tools out of closed vehicles in summer, since electronics and batteries suffer.
Dust and washdown
Fine sand scratches graduations and gets into caliper slides and level vials. Choose sealed or IP-rated electronics for outdoor and plant use and wipe slides clean. On coastal sites like Jebel Ali, coated or stainless blades resist saline air.
