What is industrial networking equipment and which types do UAE projects buy?
Industrial networking equipment is the hardened hardware that carries control and monitoring data between PLCs, drives, instruments, cameras and operator stations on a plant floor, in a substation or along a pipeline. In the UAE it sits inside the electronics and industrial automation sector, and it differs from office IT gear in three ways: it is rated for wider temperatures, it mounts on DIN rail or in 19 inch racks inside control panels, and it speaks the industrial protocols that automation vendors use.
Five product types cover most UAE enquiries from EPC contractors, panel builders, utilities and facility owners.
| Type | Typical UAE use | Key spec to state in the enquiry |
|---|---|---|
| Industrial Ethernet switches (managed and unmanaged) | Control panels, MCC rooms, substations, district cooling plants, water pump stations, port cranes | Port count and speed, managed or unmanaged, ring redundancy protocol, operating temperature, DIN rail or rack, IEC 61850-3 where used in a substation |
| Industrial firewalls and OT security gateways | The boundary between a plant control network and the corporate network, remote access for vendors | Deep packet inspection for industrial protocols, VPN, zone and conduit support, IEC 62443-4-2 certification level |
| Industrial wireless access points and clients | Warehouses, AGVs, cranes and stacker reclaimers, mobile HMIs, temporary site networks | Wi-Fi standard, roaming time, antenna and IP rating, TDRA registration of the exact model |
| Fiber optic transceivers and media converters | Long runs between substations, pump houses and control buildings, links through high-EMI areas | Single-mode or multimode, wavelength, reach, connector type, extended temperature grade, compatibility with the switch vendor |
| Protocol converters and gateways | Connecting legacy Modbus RTU or Profibus devices, package units and meters to a newer Ethernet control system | Protocols on each side, number of nodes and data points, configuration tool, galvanic isolation |
Networking is rarely bought alone. It is specified with the PLC, DCS and SCADA control systems it connects, the proximity, photoelectric and limit sensors that feed those systems, and the wider industrial automation equipment on the line. Office-grade servers and workstations belong under ICT hardware, while the DC power supplies that feed switches inside a panel are covered by power electronics suppliers.
How do you choose industrial network hardware for UAE heat, dust and humidity?
Choose UAE network hardware for the worst temperature inside the enclosure, and pick the protocol and redundancy scheme before the brand. Most field failures trace back to a switch that was rated for a cool control room but installed in a sunlit outdoor panel, or to a ring that was never tested after commissioning.
Temperature inside the panel
Industrial switches are sold in standard and extended temperature grades. Ask for the datasheet operating range and compare it with a heat calculation for the actual cabinet, including solar gain on a rooftop, jetty or pipe rack in July. A panel with a cooler is only as reliable as the cooler, so remote cabinets on pipelines or at pumping stations often justify extended temperature hardware even when air conditioning is fitted. Fiber transceivers need the same check: a commercial-grade SFP can be the weak point in an otherwise hardened switch.
Sand, dust and coastal condensation
Fanless designs avoid pulling fine dust into the electronics. Along the coast from Jebel Ali to Ruwais, humid air condenses inside panels that cool overnight, so anti-condensation heaters, sealed glands and conformal coated boards reduce corrosion. For switches mounted outside a panel, on a machine or a crane, look for IP65 or IP67 housings with M12 connectors rather than RJ45 sockets.
Substations and electrical noise
Switches inside DEWA, ADDC or industrial substations sit next to breakers and protection relays and see severe electromagnetic interference. IEC 61850-3 sets general requirements for communication equipment in power plants and substations, mainly construction, design and environmental conditions, and the 2013 edition aligns its EMC requirements with the IEC 60255 series and IEC 61000-6-5. Ask for the test report against the edition named in your specification, not a marketing claim of compliance.
Protocols and redundancy
Confirm which industrial Ethernet protocol the control system uses before ordering switches. PROFINET is common on Siemens-based plants, EtherNet/IP on Allen-Bradley systems, and Modbus TCP appears almost everywhere as a common denominator for package units and meters. Managed switches that recognise the protocol simplify diagnostics and multicast handling. For redundancy, agree the ring or parallel redundancy protocol across all vendors on the network, because mixing proprietary rings from two brands rarely works.
Which standards and approvals apply to industrial networking in the UAE?
As of 2026, no single UAE regulation covers industrial network hardware. The requirements come from radio approval for wireless products, cybersecurity rules for critical infrastructure, hazardous area certification where equipment sits in a classified zone, and the international standards cited in project specifications. We checked the items below in October 2026.
| Requirement | Applies to | Authority |
|---|---|---|
| TDRA type approval and equipment registration | Wireless access points, clients, cellular routers and any device with an intentional radio transmitter | Telecommunications and Digital Government Regulatory Authority (TDRA) |
| Dubai ICS (OT) Standard, issued 2020 | Industrial control and OT networks of Dubai government and semi-government entities | Dubai Electronic Security Center (DESC) |
| IEC 62443-4-2:2019 | Security capabilities of individual components, including network devices such as switches and firewalls | IEC, cited in owner and consultant specifications |
| IEC 61850-3:2013 (edition 2.0) | Switches, routers and clocks installed in substations and power plants | IEC, cited by utilities and EPCs |
| ECAS-Ex certificate (Cabinet Decision No. 23 of 2016) | Electrical equipment, including network devices, installed in explosive atmospheres | MoIAT, based on IECEx test reports and certificates |
| UAE control scheme for data and communication cables (Cabinet Resolution No. 36 of 2016) | Data and communication cables supplied with a network package | MoIAT |
| PROFINET certification and EtherNet/IP conformance testing | Devices that claim protocol compatibility | PROFIBUS and PROFINET International (PI); ODVA |
Wireless products and TDRA
According to TÜV Rheinland, telecom apparatus with an intentional radio transmitter must comply with UAE standards and be registered with TDRA before it is sold, distributed or used in the country, with equipment registration valid for three years and supplier registration for five. Ask the distributor for the TDRA registration of the exact access point or client model, including the antenna kit, before the order is placed.
Cybersecurity for critical owners
For Dubai utilities, transport and energy owners, expect the tender to cite the DESC ICS standard. Elsewhere, ISA/IEC 62443 is the usual reference. IEC 62443-4-2 defines what a component must do to support a given security level, so ask firewall and managed switch vendors which security level the product is certified to and by whom. Our page on control systems in the UAE covers the system-level side of 62443.
Hazardous areas
MoIAT's requirements list for ECAS-Ex asks for the IECEx test report, the IECEx certificate and a quality assessment report. A switch or access point installed in a Zone 1 or Zone 2 area at a gas plant or terminal therefore needs this paperwork on top of the vendor datasheet. The guide to ECAS and EQM product conformity in the UAE explains the process.
Who supplies industrial networking equipment in the UAE?
Industrial network hardware in the UAE comes from automation vendors that sell networking as part of their control platforms, from specialist industrial networking brands through authorised distributors, and from system integrators who design and commission the network. The automation brands below carry their own industrial network ranges.
- Siemens SCALANCE switches and RUGGEDCOM substation-grade network hardware, used on PROFINET plants and in utility substations.
- Allen-Bradley Stratix managed switches from Rockwell Automation, built with Cisco technology for EtherNet/IP networks.
- Schneider Electric Modicon Networking switches, formerly sold as ConneXium, which include managed, unmanaged and IP67 models.
Specialist networking brands are generally sold through authorised distributors in Dubai and Abu Dhabi, while integrators design and commission complete networks. When comparing offers, ask:
- Is the seller an authorised partner for the brand, and who handles warranty returns and firmware support in the UAE?
- Which models are in local stock in JAFZA or Dubai, and which ship from the factory?
- Can the supplier provide TDRA registration for wireless models and ECAS-Ex certificates for hazardous area models?
- Who designs the network, configures the VLANs, redundancy and security, and tests the ring at commissioning?
The guide to sourcing industrial suppliers in the UAE and Saudi Arabia covers the checks that apply to any distributor. If you have a bill of quantities ready, post your requirement and let suppliers quote against it.
What drives the price and lead time of industrial networking in the UAE?
Price follows management features, port speed and environmental grade more than port count. An unmanaged five port switch and a managed gigabit switch with IEC 61850-3 testing can look similar on a drawing and differ several times in cost.
- Managed or unmanaged: redundancy protocols, VLANs, diagnostics and security features sit in managed firmware and drive the price.
- Environmental grade: extended temperature, conformal coating, substation EMC testing and hazardous area certification each add cost and narrow the list of models in stock.
- Optics: vendor-coded SFP transceivers are often a significant share of the bill, and some switches reject third-party modules.
- Security certification: firewalls and switches certified to IEC 62443-4-2 cost more than uncertified equivalents but shorten the compliance review.
- Approvals: TDRA registration and ECAS-Ex add time if the exact model is not already registered in the UAE.
- Project volume: large orders for utilities and EPC packages usually go through project pricing with the vendor rather than distributor stock.
Standard DIN rail switches and common transceivers are often available from UAE stock. Rack switches, substation-grade models, hazardous area variants and large quantities are usually built to order, so confirm the lead time in writing and plan approvals in parallel.
