What are gate valves and which types do UAE buyers order?
A gate valve isolates a line by raising a gate fully out of the flow path to open it and driving it down onto two seats to close it. Fully open, a full-bore gate valve leaves almost no restriction, which is why it remains standard for on/off duty in UAE process plants and water networks. It is one of the core types of industrial valves stocked by UAE suppliers, and it is an isolation valve only: a gate left part open vibrates and its seats erode, so throttling belongs to globe valves or control valves.
SLB, whose Cameron and WKM lines include slab and expanding gates, groups the designs by gate shape. A wedge gate seals against tapered metal seats; a slab gate is a single plate that slides between two seat rings, mostly on crude and NGL lines; an expanding gate has a gate and segment that separate at the end of travel to force a mechanical seal on both seats.

The stem arrangement is the other choice. Outside screw and yoke (OS&Y) rising stems show the position at a glance and are normal in plants and fire systems; non-rising stems save height and suit buried water valves operated with a key. For slurry and solids, a knife gate valve is the better tool, and for fast quarter-turn isolation many UAE gas plants have replaced gates with trunnion ball valves.
How do UAE conditions affect gate valve selection and care?
For gate valves in the UAE, the risks are corrosion of exposed stems and bolting in salty coastal air, sand on rising stems, and seat damage from use as a throttling valve. The pressure rating comes from the piping class; these site factors decide coating, trim and protection.
Exposed rising stems
An OS&Y gate keeps its threaded stem outside the body, where windblown sand and salt stick to grease. Specify stem protectors or covers on outdoor valves, stainless or coated yoke bolting, and a marine-grade external coating on plants near the coast. Valves in laydown yards should keep end caps on and sit off the ground until installation.
Fugitive emissions on hydrocarbon lines
Rising-stem valves leak at the packing, and refinery owners now often require a type test. API 624, 2nd edition (February 2023), sets a 100 ppmv acceptance limit for rising and rising-rotating stem valves fitted with packing already tested to API 622, up to NPS 42 and Class 1500. Ask which valve model and packing set the certificate covers.
Water networks and firewater
Buried and chamber-mounted gate valves on UAE water and irrigation networks are mostly resilient-seated ductile iron with fusion-bonded epoxy. AVK, for example, designs its UK Series 21/60 valve to BS 5163 and EN 1074 parts 1 and 2 for water at up to 70 °C. Confirm the standard and coating the water authority or master developer specifies. Which standards and approvals apply to gate valves in the UAE?
Gate valves in the UAE are bought to API and water industry standards named in the project specification, plus ADNOC vendor approval on ADNOC work. As of 2026 a mechanical gate valve does not normally need a UAE product conformity certificate, but fire service valves need Civil Defence approval. Standards checked in October 2026.

The most common mix-up on UAE quotes is between API 600 and API 602. A NPS 2 Class 800 socket weld gate on a drain line is an API 602 forged valve, while the same size in Class 300 flanged on a process line may be quoted to either; the line class decides, so state the standard per line item. API 603 is used where the body itself must be stainless or alloy, and API 6D applies where a pipeline specification calls for slab or expanding gates with double block and bleed. Who supplies gate valves in the UAE?
UAE gate valve supply runs through manufacturers' regional offices, authorised distributors holding stock in Dubai, Sharjah and Abu Dhabi, and traders sourcing per order. Common carbon steel API 600 and API 602 valves and ductile iron water gates are widely stocked; alloy, high-class and large through-conduit gates are made to order.

What drives gate valve price and lead time in the UAE?
Gate valve prices in the UAE depend mostly on body material, class and size, then on trim, emission and inspection requirements. Lead time depends on whether castings or forgings are already available.
- Body and trim: carbon steel, low alloy, stainless or duplex, with stellite or other hardfaced seats.
- Class and size: Class 900 and above and large bores mean heavy castings and long machining.
- Construction: forged compact, cast bolted bonnet, pressure seal bonnet or through-conduit.
- Qualification: API 624 emission testing, NACE statements and witnessed tests.
- Operation: handwheel, bevel gearbox or electric actuator, the last needed on large high-class gates because of the number of turns.
Stocked valves can ship from a UAE warehouse almost immediately. Made-to-order valves add foundry time, testing, inspection release and sea freight to Jebel Ali or Khalifa Port, and large multi-turn gates often need electric actuators with their own lead time.
