What are collaborative robots, and which types do UAE plants use?

A collaborative robot is a robot arm designed so that a person can share its workspace: it limits its own speed, force and power, and stops when it detects contact or a person too close. It belongs to the industrial automation family for UAE manufacturers, and in the UAE it is bought mostly by small and mid-sized factories in Dubai Industrial City, KEZAD, Sharjah and Ajman that want automation without a fenced cell, and by logistics and e-commerce operators for packing and palletising.

Cobot applicationTypical UAE useWhat to specify
Machine tendingLoading CNC lathes, injection moulding machines and presses in metal and plastics shopsPayload including gripper, reach to the chuck or mould, interface to the machine's door and cycle signals
Cobot palletiserCartons of water, juice and food at line end, where a fenced palletising cell will not fitPayload at full reach, lift column for stack height, area scanners, pallet pattern software
Pick and packE-commerce fulfilment, pharmaceutical and cosmetics packing in Dubai South and JAFZAVision for part location, vacuum or soft gripper, cycle time with collaborative speeds
Screwdriving and assemblyElectrical panel, appliance and furniture assemblyRepeatability, torque-controlled screwdriver, force sensing at the flange
Welding and dispensingShort-run MIG welding in fabrication shops, sealant and glue beadsWelding package, hand-guided teaching, fume extraction

When the job is heavy, fast or hazardous, such as cement bag palletising at high rates or spot welding, a conventional arm in a guarded cell is usually the better buy: see industrial robots for UAE palletising and welding. Many cobot cells add machine vision for part location and inspection, and the area scanners that slow the cobot when someone approaches are wired to safety controllers that manage the stop signals.

Is a cobot safe to run without guarding in the UAE?

Not automatically. Under the 2025 revision of ISO 10218, collaboration is a property of the application, not the robot: the arm, the gripper, the part, the speed and the layout are assessed together, and the integrator must show the risk is acceptable before people work beside it.

ISO 10218-1:2025 covers the robot maker's design and ISO 10218-2:2025 covers the application and cell. Industry summaries report that the cobot guidance previously published as ISO/TS 15066 now sits inside the 2025 series, and they describe four collaborative techniques:

  • Safety-rated monitored stop: the robot halts while a person is in the shared zone and resumes when they leave.
  • Hand guiding: an operator moves the arm through a guiding device, common for teaching welding paths.
  • Speed and separation monitoring: safety-rated scanners slow the robot as a person gets closer and stop it at a minimum distance.
  • Power and force limiting: contact forces and pressures are kept within set limits, so a collision does not injure.

The weak point is usually the tooling. A sharp gripper finger, a knife or a heavy carton can make a power-limited arm unsafe at any speed, which is why many UAE cobot palletisers still use area scanners. FANUC's catalogue for the CRX-10iA notes that motion speed must be set according to the risk assessment of the system, and lists a lower maximum speed in collaborative mode than in high speed mode.

How do UAE heat, dust and humidity affect collaborative robots?

Most cobots are rated for an indoor ambient range that tops out between 45 and 50 degrees C, so they need a cooled or at least ventilated hall in a UAE summer. Check the control box as well as the arm, because the box is often the tighter limit.

  • Temperature: Universal Robots' UR10e datasheet lists an ambient range of 0 to 50 degrees C. FANUC's CRX-10iA catalogue gives 0 to 45 degrees C for the installation environment. Warehouses with only evaporative cooling in Al Quoz or Jebel Ali can exceed both in August.
  • Humidity: UR states 90% relative humidity or less, non-condensing; FANUC states normally 75% or less with no dew. Coastal sites that switch air conditioning off at night risk condensation inside the controller.
  • Dust and washdown: ratings differ between arm and controller. The UR10e arm is IP54; the FANUC CRX-10iA arm is IP67 with an IP54 controller; Omron lists its TM5-900 at IP54. Food plants that wash down need the rating that matches the cleaning regime, plus food-grade lubricant where incidental contact is possible.
  • Floor and mounting: mobile cobot carts moved between machines need levelling and repeatable docking, or the taught points drift.

Which standards and approvals apply to cobots in the UAE?

As of October 2026, the UAE has no cobot-specific regulation. Buyers call up ISO robot and machine safety standards in the purchase order, and MoIAT conformity rules apply to the electrical equipment. Confirm product scope with MoIAT or a notified body before import.

Ask for the maker's declaration against ISO 10218-1 and the integrator's written risk assessment for your cell, and keep both on file for insurers and audits. MoIAT's Technology Transformation Program, with its Industry 4.0 assessment index, prompts many factories to start with a cobot project. The ECAS and EQM conformity guide covers MoIAT certificates.

Who supplies collaborative robots in the UAE?

Cobots reach UAE buyers through the makers' Dubai regional offices, authorised distributors who resell arms with gripper and vision packages, and integrators who deliver a finished, risk-assessed cell. For a first project, an integrator that owns the risk assessment is usually worth the margin.

Brands selling cobots in the region include Universal Robots (the UR e-Series), FANUC with its CRX range, ABB with GoFa, Omron with the TM series and its built-in camera, Yaskawa Motoman with the HC series, and KUKA with the LBR iiwa. Compare the ecosystem as well as the arm: certified grippers, palletising software and the number of local engineers trained on the brand.

What affects the price and lead time of a cobot in the UAE?

The arm is often less than half the cost of a working cobot application. Gripper, vision, scanners, pedestal or cart, programming and the risk assessment make up the rest, and lead time follows the slowest custom item.

  • Payload class: 3 to 5 kg arms are commonly held in regional stock; 20 kg and heavier palletising models are more often ordered from the factory.
  • Kits versus custom: a vendor palletising kit is quicker to deploy than a custom cell, but check it handles your carton sizes and pallet heights.
  • Safety hardware: area scanners and safety controllers add cost but often allow faster cycles than power and force limiting alone.
  • Training: cobots are sold on easy programming, but someone on your staff still needs training to change recipes and recover from stops.
  • Service: ask where spare joints and control boxes are stocked and how fast a replacement reaches the plant.

Frequently Asked Questions — Collaborative Robots

What is the difference between a cobot and an industrial robot in the UAE?
A collaborative robot limits its own speed, force and power and stops on contact, so it can share space with people after a risk assessment. An industrial robot is faster and stronger but normally works inside guarding. UAE plants choose cobots for light, varied tasks and conventional robots for heavy, high-rate work.
Can a collaborative robot work without a fence in a UAE factory?
A collaborative robot can work without a fence only if the integrator's risk assessment for the whole application, including gripper, part, speed and layout, shows the risk is acceptable under ISO 10218-2:2025. Sharp tools or heavy loads often still need area scanners or partial guarding.
What temperature can collaborative robots handle in the UAE?
Collaborative robots are usually rated for indoor use. Universal Robots lists 0 to 50 degrees C for the UR10e and FANUC lists 0 to 45 degrees C for the CRX-10iA installation environment. UAE warehouses without full air conditioning can exceed these limits in summer, so measure the hall first.
Which standards apply to collaborative robots in the UAE?
As of 2026, collaborative robots in the UAE are specified to ISO 10218-1:2025 for the robot and ISO 10218-2:2025 for the application, with ISO 13849-1 for safety functions. MoIAT rules such as UAE RoHS apply to electrical equipment in scope. There is no separate UAE cobot regulation.
Are collaborative robots suitable for palletising in the UAE?
Collaborative robots suit low to moderate rate palletising of cartons in UAE food, water and consumer goods plants, especially where floor space is tight. For heavy bags, high rates or tall stacks, a conventional palletising robot in a guarded cell is usually faster and cheaper per pallet.
Should I buy a cobot from a distributor or an integrator in the UAE?
Buy a collaborative robot from a distributor if your team can design the gripper, program the task and carry out the risk assessment. For a first project, a UAE integrator that delivers a validated cell and trains operators usually costs more but reduces the risk of an unsafe or unproductive installation.
What drives the cost of a collaborative robot cell in the UAE?
The cost of a collaborative robot cell in the UAE depends on the arm's payload, the gripper and vision system, safety scanners, the pedestal or mobile cart, programming, risk assessment and training. The arm alone is often less than half of the total, so compare quotes line by line.
