Coding & Marking Machines Suppliers, UAE
Coding and marking machines in the UAE print expiry dates, batch numbers, barcodes and serial codes directly onto bottles, cans, cartons, film and cables as they run down the production line. This page compares continuous inkjet, thermal inkjet, laser, thermal transfer and large character coders, explains what UAE heat does to inks and solvents, sets out the food and pharmaceutical coding rules as of 2026, and lists the brands UAE suppliers carry.

What are coding and marking machines and which technologies do UAE plants use?
A coding and marking machine adds variable data, such as a best before date, a lot code or a 2D barcode, to each pack at line speed, so every unit can be traced. It is the in-line end of the printing and labelling machinery family: presses print the fixed artwork, and the coder adds what changes from batch to batch. In the UAE the main buyers are bottled water, juice and dairy plants, snack and bakery lines, pharmaceutical packers, and cable, pipe and building products makers who mark lengths and grades on extruded product.
The right technology depends on the surface, the line speed and how much the code has to say. Most plants end up running two or three types: one for the primary pack, one for the outer case and a print-and-apply unit for pallets.
| Technology | Typical use on UAE lines | What to check before buying |
|---|---|---|
| Continuous inkjet (CIJ) | Dates on PET bottles, cans, caps, eggs, and running metre marks on cable and pipe | Ink chemistry for the substrate (MEK, ethanol or pigmented), solvent use, number of lines, maximum line speed |
| Thermal inkjet (TIJ) | High resolution text and DataMatrix codes on cartons, pharmaceutical folding boxes and labels | Ink dry time on coated board, cartridge life, throw distance, code grade on your stock |
| Thermal transfer overprinter (TTO) | Dates and barcodes on flexible film on flow wrappers and vertical form-fill-seal machines | Intermittent or continuous mode, ribbon length and width, print area, ribbon saving features |
| Laser (CO2 or fibre) | Permanent codes on PET, coated cartons, labels and some metals and plastics, with no ink | Wavelength suited to the material, marking field, fume extraction, laser class under IEC 60825-1 |
| Large character inkjet | Outer cases, shrink trays and sacks of cement, feed and fertiliser | Character height, porous or non-porous ink, case speed |
| Print and apply labellers | GS1-128 case and pallet labels with SSCC numbers for retailers and distributors | Label size, apply method (tamp, blow or wipe), integration with the warehouse system |
If the job is applying pre-printed labels rather than printing on the pack, look at labelling machines for wrap-around and front and back labels; for short runs of fully printed labels, digital label presses can replace a separate coding step. Pharmaceutical lines usually pair the coder with machine vision cameras that read and grade every code.
How does UAE heat affect coder inks, solvents and print quality?
Heat speeds solvent evaporation, so a continuous inkjet coder in a hot UAE hall uses more make-up fluid and needs more care to keep ink viscosity stable. Storage temperature of the fluids matters as much as the machine itself.
- Make-up consumption. Videojet describes its MEK-based make-up as designed to replace solvent lost to evaporation in normal CIJ operation. The hotter the room, the more is lost, so ask each bidder for make-up use per shift at your actual hall temperature, not at a European test condition.
- Fluid storage. The same Videojet make-up has a stated shelf life of 24 months when stored between 2 and 35 degrees Celsius. Summer temperatures in UAE warehouses, containers and delivery vans can run above that, so keep inks and solvents in an air-conditioned store and check the safety data sheet of every fluid for storage and flammability limits.
- Condensation. Cold-filled water and dairy bottles sweat in coastal humidity, and ink codes can smear or fail to key. Ask for an ink rated for wet or condensing surfaces, or consider a laser coder that marks without ink.
- Dust and fumes. Fine dust clogs filters and fans; ask about positive air pressure on the print head and the cabinet rating. Laser coders produce fumes and particles from the marked surface, so budget for extraction and filter changes.
Which rules decide what a UAE coder has to print?
As of 2026, no UAE licence is needed to run a coder; the rules govern the code. Food plants follow the Gulf food labelling regulation, pharmaceutical packers follow the national traceability programme, and both rely on GS1 numbers owned by the brand.
| Requirement | What it means for the coder | Authority or reference |
|---|---|---|
| GSO 9:2022, Labeling of prepackaged food stuffs | Date and lot content on food packs, readable and printed on the pack or original label | GSO, applied by UAE food authorities |
| Tatmeen pharmaceutical traceability | GS1 DataMatrix with GTIN, random serial number, batch and expiry on secondary packs, plus SSCC labels for aggregation | Ministry of Health and Prevention (MOHAP) |
| GS1 GTIN, GS1-128 and SSCC | Retail barcodes, case and pallet labels from print-and-apply units | GS1 UAE (member organisation) |
| IEC 60825-1 | Laser class, warning labels and interlocks on laser coders | IEC standard, named in the purchase specification |
| ECAS (low voltage and RoHS scope) | Electrical equipment that falls within MoIAT's regulated product list | MoIAT |
For medicines, a serialisation vendor's summary of MOHAP's guidance says secondary packs, imported or local, carry a GS1 DataMatrix with the GTIN, batch, expiry and a random serial number, with aggregation through SSCC codes required since 13 December 2022. That means the coder must print a unique number on every carton at line speed and talk to serialisation software, so buy the printer, the camera and the software as one system. Confirm the current specification with MOHAP before freezing the pack layout. For electrical conformity, the ECAS and EQM guide explains how to check that a certificate covers your model, and the GCC food plant packaging machinery guide covers coding on food lines.
Who supplies coding and marking machines in the UAE?
UAE plants buy coders from authorised distributors and manufacturers' regional offices that keep inks, ribbons, print heads and engineers in the Emirates. A coder is only as good as its consumable supply, so the local stock matters more than the brochure.
- Full range of technologies. Videojet, Domino and Markem-Imaje make continuous inkjet, laser and thermal transfer coders and print-and-apply labellers, and Markem-Imaje also sells serialisation software.
- Continuous inkjet specialists. Linx makes CIJ, laser and thermal transfer units; Paul Leibinger builds CIJ printers with a sealed nozzle system; Hitachi and KGK make CIJ coders, Hitachi including cable and wire marking models.
- Cases and pallets. Diagraph makes print-and-apply labellers and high resolution case coders; EBS Ink-Jet makes large character and handheld printers.
Standard CIJ and thermal inkjet coders are often in UAE stock and can run within days of delivery. Laser systems, serialisation lines and print-and-apply units integrated with a warehouse system take longer. To compare offers, post your requirement with photos of your packs, the code content and your line speed.
What drives the price and lead time of a coder in the UAE?
The machine price is the smaller part of what a coder costs over its life. Ink, make-up, ribbons, filters, service kits and print heads add up, so compare a five-year total cost at your output. Price also rises with resolution, number of print heads, line speed, laser power, and integration with the line controller, vision system and serialisation software. Pharmaceutical installations add qualification documents and testing. Lead time runs from days for a stocked coder to several weeks for a laser or serialisation system, plus trials on your own packs.
