Casting & Forging Suppliers, UAE
Casting and forging in the UAE covers the foundries and forge shops that make near-net-shape metal parts: sand, investment, die and centrifugal castings, and open die, closed die and ring rolled forgings. This page explains which process suits which part, the ASTM material specifications, NDT and heat treatment that UAE oil, gas, water and marine buyers ask for, and what drives cost and lead time.

What are casting and forging, and which process fits which part?
Casting pours molten metal into a mould and lets it solidify into shape; forging squeezes or hammers hot solid metal into shape. Both produce near-net-shape blanks that are then machined, and in the UAE both sit within the metals and fabrication sector for the UAE. A cast part can have complex internal passages; a forged part has a continuous grain flow and no shrinkage porosity, which is why pressure-retaining flanges and fittings are forged and complex valve bodies and pump casings are usually cast.
| Process | Typical parts for UAE buyers | Key specification points |
|---|---|---|
| Sand casting for large and complex shapes | Pump casings, valve bodies, impellers, manhole frames, machine bases, replacement parts for old plant | Material grade, pattern ownership, machining allowance, casting quality level and NDT extent |
| Investment (lost wax) casting | Small precise valve trim, pump and turbine parts, marine hardware, stainless fittings | Alloy, dimensional tolerance class, surface finish, tooling cost versus quantity |
| Aluminium and zinc die casting | Electrical enclosures, light fittings, motor housings, consumer and automotive parts | Alloy, porosity limits, tool life, minimum order quantity, finishing |
| Centrifugal casting of tubes, sleeves and rings | Bushes, liners, rolls, bronze bearings, pipe and rings for heat-resistant service | Material, outside and bore size, wall thickness, machining allowance |
| Open die forging | Shafts, blocks, discs, large flanges and heavy repair parts | Material and heat treatment, forging reduction ratio, ultrasonic testing level |
| Closed die (impression die) forging | Flanges, socket-weld and threaded fittings, valve bodies and bonnets, hooks and shackles | Die availability, material specification, hardness, dimensions to the product standard |
| Seamless rolled rings | Large flanges, slewing bearing races, gear blanks, pressure vessel rings | Ring OD, ID and height, material, heat treatment, ultrasonic testing |
Many castings and forgings arrive at site as part of something else. Forged flanges and fittings are covered in more detail under pipe fittings and flanges, and the steel grades behind them under steel products. Aluminium, copper alloy and bronze castings draw on non-ferrous metals, and finish machining and welding is often done by metal fabrication and machining shops.
How do UAE operating conditions change casting and forging specifications?
Most UAE castings and forgings end up in seawater, hydrocarbon or hot outdoor service, so the material grade and soundness requirements tighten compared with general engineering parts.
- Seawater and desalination: pump casings, impellers and valve bodies for seawater intakes and desalination plants are often specified in duplex stainless, nickel aluminium bronze or other bronzes rather than carbon steel or plain cast iron. Get the material choice from the process designer, not the foundry.
- Sour gas service: castings and forgings for ADNOC sour gas assets usually carry hardness limits and material restrictions from the owner specification; ask the supplier to show how heat treatment and hardness testing meet them.
- Heat: parts that sit in direct sun and hot plant rooms need coatings and elastomers chosen for the temperature, but the metal itself is rarely the limit.
- Salt air and storage: machined forgings left in open yards near Jebel Ali or Khalifa Port rust quickly; specify rust preventive, end caps and covered storage.
Which material standards apply to castings and forgings in the UAE?
UAE oil, gas, power and water projects mostly specify ASTM material standards for steel castings and forgings, together with the dimensional standard for the finished part and the owner's specification. The common ones, checked as of 2026, are below.
| Standard or requirement | Applies to | Issued by |
|---|---|---|
| ASTM A105/A105M | Carbon steel forgings for piping components such as flanges, fittings and valves for ambient and higher-temperature service, up to 10,000 lb per piece | ASTM International |
| ASTM A182/A182M | Forged low-alloy and stainless steel flanges, fittings and valve parts for pressure service, including duplex grades | ASTM International |
| ASTM A216/A216M (grades WCA, WCB, WCC) | Carbon steel castings for valves, flanges, fittings and pressure parts suitable for fusion welding; adopted as a GSO standard in 2024 | ASTM International; GCC Standardization Organization |
| Dimensional standards, for example ASME B16.5 | Flange and fitting dimensions and pressure classes | ASME |
| NDT personnel certification | Inspectors performing radiography, ultrasonic, magnetic particle and penetrant testing | ISO 9712 schemes or employer schemes such as ASNT, as the specification requires |
| Vendor registration and ICV | Suppliers to ADNOC and other ICV programme members | ADNOC; MoIAT National ICV Programme |
The pipe fittings and flanges standards guide explains how material and dimensional standards combine on a flange order.
What NDT and heat treatment should you ask for?
Ask for the NDT methods and acceptance levels in the purchase order, not after the parts are made. Castings hide shrinkage and gas porosity inside; forgings can hide laps and internal bursts. The usual split is:
- Radiographic testing for critical areas of pressure-retaining castings such as valve bodies.
- Ultrasonic testing for forgings, rolled rings and thick sections, where volumetric defects matter.
- Magnetic particle testing for ferritic surfaces and penetrant testing for stainless and non-magnetic alloys.
- Hardness testing after heat treatment, and on sour service parts, to the owner's limits.
Heat treatment changes the properties more than the shaping does. ASTM A216 castings are supplied annealed, normalised, or normalised and tempered; forgings are typically normalised or quenched and tempered depending on the grade. Ask for the furnace chart and the heat treatment record with the test coupons. Where the foundry or forge does not have its own furnace, heat treatment services and independent NDT companies fill the gap.
Who supplies castings and forgings in the UAE?
UAE supply is a mix of local foundries and forge shops and imports. Local shops in Sharjah, Ajman, Dubai and the Abu Dhabi industrial areas mostly handle sand castings, centrifugal bronze parts, replacement parts reverse engineered from samples, and smaller open die and closed die work. Heavy open die forgings, large rolled rings and high-volume closed die flanges are usually imported from forge plants abroad and supplied through UAE stockists and agents.
- Foundries and forges: best for drawings-based parts, patterns and dies you will reuse, and repair parts with short lead times.
- Stockists: hold forged flanges and fittings to standard dimensions and grades; fastest for standard items.
- Agents of overseas plants: handle heavy forgings, rings and specialist alloys made to order.
Ask which processes are done in-house (melting, moulding, forging, heat treatment, machining, NDT) and which are subcontracted, and who owns the pattern or die. For multiple quotes on a drawing, post your requirement with material grade, weight, quantity and NDT level.
What drives the price and lead time of castings and forgings?
Price is driven by metal weight and grade, tooling, and the amount of testing; lead time by pattern or die making, melt or forging schedules and heat treatment.
- Tooling: a new pattern, wax die, die casting tool or forging die is a one-off cost that only pays back over quantity.
- Material grade: duplex, super duplex and nickel aluminium bronze cost more and have fewer approved melters than carbon steel.
- Weight and machining allowance: open die forgings carry extra stock to machine off; tighter near-net shapes cost more in tooling but less in machining.
- Testing: full radiography, extra mechanical tests and witness inspection add days to weeks.
- Rework: weld repair of castings needs a qualified procedure and may need re-heat treatment; agree what repair is allowed before ordering.
- Freight: heavy imported forgings move by sea into Jebel Ali or Khalifa Port; air freight is reserved for urgent small parts.
