Barite Suppliers, UAE
Barite in the UAE is barium sulphate, ground and sold mainly as the weighting agent in oil and gas drilling mud, with smaller volumes for paint and plastic fillers and radiation-shielding concrete. This page explains API 13A grades, how to read a certificate of analysis, where UAE supply comes from, and what drives price and lead time.

What is barite and what is it used for in the UAE?
Barite (also written baryte or barytes) is the mineral barium sulphate, BaSO4. Pure material contains 58.8 percent barium and has a specific gravity of about 4.5, which is why it is called heavy spar. Its dense, inert and non-magnetic character, along with low abrasiveness, made it the standard weighting agent in drilling fluids worldwide, where the British Geological Survey put drilling at about 83 percent of world consumption and the USGS gives roughly 70 percent.
In the UAE, demand follows well activity offshore and onshore Abu Dhabi, and the product is sold within industrial minerals for the UAE as well as through oilfield supply chains. The remaining uses are smaller but higher in value.
| Grade or use | Typical UAE buyer | What the buyer controls |
|---|---|---|
| API-grade drilling barite | Drilling contractors, mud engineers, ADNOC supply chain | Specific gravity, particle size, soluble calcium, API 13A certificate |
| Lump or crude barite | Grinding mills, traders | Density, impurities, size, shipment lot |
| Micronised or filler grade | Paint, plastic and friction-material makers | Whiteness, particle size, purity |
| Heavy aggregate | Shielding concrete for hospitals and nuclear-related rooms | Density, crushed size range, mix design |
Which API 13A requirements apply to drilling barite?
Drilling barite is bought to API Specification 13A for drilling fluids materials. Until 2010 the specification asked for a minimum specific gravity of 4.20; a later edition added a 4.10 grade effective 1 August 2010. In both grades at least 97 percent by weight must pass a 200-mesh (75 micron) screen, no more than 30 percent can be finer than 6 microns, and water-soluble alkaline earth metals, such as calcium, are limited to 250 ppm. These figures come from the USGS summary of the standard; confirm them against the current edition your operator calls up.
The standard is also published internationally, and operators often reference both numbers, so ask your supplier which one it certifies to. Buyers should ask for a certificate of analysis for each lot, with density, particle size and soluble calcium, and sample the delivery on arrival. Related drilling materials such as bentonite sit on the bentonite page and under drilling fluids and mud chemicals.
Where does barite come from, and what does that mean for UAE buyers?
Almost all barite used in the Gulf is imported. A market summary says the GCC imports nearly all of its barite, mainly from India, Morocco and China. USGS price records for API-grade 4.20 SG lump from major exporters ranged from about USD 92 to USD 100 per tonne free on board in 2021, which shows the order of magnitude but not today's price. In the UAE, the material arrives at Jebel Ali, Khalifa Port and Fujairah as crude lump or ground powder.
- Lump versus ground. Lump needs a grinding mill; ground bagged or bulk powder is ready for the mud plant.
- Blended grades. Higher density 4.20 SG material is sometimes blended with lower density barite, so check the certificate.
- Origin documents. Ask for a certificate of origin and lot analysis, and a safety data sheet for your HSE file.
Oil-service companies also run their own barite supply: in the United States, Halliburton, Baker Hughes and SLB's M-I SWACO have operated barite mines and grinding plants, according to the USGS. See Halliburton, SLB and Baker Hughes for their drilling fluids businesses.
Do other weighting agents replace barite?
Alternatives exist, but barite is still the standard weighting agent in drilling fluids because it is inexpensive, widely available and easy on drilling tools, according to the British Geological Survey. Denser products such as iron oxide are chosen by fluids engineers for special high-density wells. Buy against the mud programme: ask the fluids contractor which weighting agent and grade the plan assumes, and hold a reserve of each.
How do UAE heat and humidity affect barite storage?
Barite is chemically inert, so heat does not harm it, but moisture and dust do. Damp bags clump, and ground powder in open storage picks up dust and moisture. Condensation inside containers cooling overnight is a recurring cause of caking in coastal yards.
- Choose multi-wall or lined bags, or sealed bulk tanks.
- Keep pallets off the ground and under cover.
- Use dust control at mixing points and the right respirators for operators.
Which approvals and documents apply in the UAE?
For imported bulk barite the practical paperwork is a certificate of origin, lot analysis and safety data sheet, plus whatever your operator requires. Checked as of 2026; confirm with the buyer and customs broker.
| Requirement | Applies to | Set by |
|---|---|---|
| API Specification 13A (also issued as ISO 13500) | Barite and other drilling fluid materials | American Petroleum Institute; called up by operators |
| Supplier registration and product acceptance | Selling to ADNOC group companies | ADNOC group procurement |
| Certificate of analysis per lot | Density and particle size claims | Producer or independent lab |
| Safety data sheet | Handling dust and storage | Supplier |
Fluid additives sold into oil and gas are covered in oilfield chemicals. For other minerals often bought on the same enquiry, see calcium carbonate and silica sand.
How do you choose a barite supplier?
Choose on certified quality, origin consistency and delivery reliability. A trader without a lab certificate is a risk on a drilling programme, where under-density barite forces more material into the mud.
- Ask for the API 13A certificate and recent lot analyses.
- Confirm packing options, bulk capability and storage at Jebel Ali or Khalifa.
- Check how it handles shipment delays and replacement lots.

What drives price and lead time for barite?
Price follows ex-mine price, ocean freight, grade (4.20 SG commands a premium over 4.10), grinding and packing. Because drilling demand tracks rig activity, prices can move quickly when programmes ramp up. Ground bagged barite from UAE stock is available in days, while lump shipments from the origin country take weeks.
Plan stock against rig schedules, and ask for a written delivery date plus a replacement-lot clause for off-specification deliveries.
