Surge protection devices in Saudi Arabia protect plant electronics, drives and instruments from lightning and switching surges. This page explains Type 1, 2 and 3 coordination, how Saudi heat, 60 Hz systems and solar parks affect selection, which GSO, IEC and SASO references apply, and how to choose a supplier, price and lead time.
The city is growing for two reasons: a steady stream of visitors and a large building programme around the holy sites, plus the factories of the Madinah industrial city. A 2017 report said MODON had inaugurated a central electric conversion station of 1,000 megawatts for the industrial city, which shows how much of the local demand is for power rather than process control. For buyers this means mechanical, electrical and instrumentation supply is led by distribution gear, cable and lighting.
Contractors and facilities teams buy low voltage switchgear, distribution boards, power cables, cable trays, circuit breakers and industrial LED lighting. Factories add motors and drives, PLC controllers and pressure gauges for lines handling food, plastics and chemicals. Hotels and large public buildings need emergency lighting and automatic transfer switches.
Electrical wholesalers cluster around the main commercial roads and the industrial city; for big transformers and medium voltage panels, manufacturers ship from Jeddah, Dammam or Riyadh. Smaller instruments often come by courier through Jeddah. Yanbu is the nearest sea port for imports.
Ask for the product certificates the Saudi regulators and the electricity utility require for the equipment class, and confirm the current rule with them rather than relying on a brochure. Insist on factory test reports for panels and transformers. For hazardous areas such as fuel storage, check the ex rating on motors and lighting. Instruments need calibration certificates; see calibration equipment for suppliers that can recalibrate in the region.
Compare at least three quotes using post a requirement, with ratings, short-circuit levels and delivery to site stated.
Plan for summer load. Madinah air conditioning demand pushes transformers and cables hard, so ask for derating curves at high ambient temperature and for IP-rated enclosures where dust is common. Keep a spares list for breakers and contactors on site.
Madinah is first a city of pilgrimage and visitors, so its industry is concentrated in a planned estate rather than spread through the city. That estate is Madinah Industrial City, run by MODON, the Saudi Authority for Industrial Cities and Technology Zones. Dar Al Riyadh lists a MODON project of 28 ready-built factories there, with works dated 2022 to 2024, covering the buildings plus roads, water supply, firefighting and sewage networks. MODON also said in 2024 that two industrial cities in Madinah were among the most attractive in the Kingdom for food and beverage manufacturing in 2023. Inside the city, the other large building sites are tied to hospitality. Knowledge Economic City, in its Islamic World District, is a 6.8 million square metre development, and Marriott announced three hotels there in December 2024. Rua Al Madinah, east of the Prophet's Mosque, was announced in August 2022 on 1.5 million square metres with a target of 47,000 new hotel rooms by 2030.
Madinah has no seaport of its own. Sea cargo normally comes in through the Red Sea at Yanbu, the nearest industrial port, and then moves by truck. In December 2025 Mawani signed a contract with a logistics operator for an integrated logistics centre of 120,490 square metres at Yanbu Commercial Port, worth over SAR 29 million. Prince Mohammad bin Abdulaziz International Airport handles passengers and some goods; in 2023 Arab News reported date-shipment permits issued through it. Argaam reported in 2018 that the airport reached 12 million passengers a year of capacity after a second phase in 2014, with a third phase aimed at 16 million by 2037. The Haramain high-speed railway links Madinah with Jeddah and Makkah, and Knowledge Economic City plans a connection to its station. The line is passenger rail, so freight still travels by road.
MODON handles factory land and ready units in the industrial city. Building permits come through the Madinah municipality, fire and life safety approvals through the General Directorate of Civil Defense, and electricity connections through Saudi Electricity Company. The Prophet's Mosque cooling plant is operated by the General Authority for the Care of the Affairs of the Prophet's Mosque. Medical products need approval from the Saudi Food and Drug Authority. Confirm each current step on the authority's own platform.
Hospitality, facilities and cooling lead demand because of the visitor economy. Healthcare follows, with King Salman Medical City of 1,246 beds. Date packers and food plants buy processing and packaging machinery, and farms supply a date crop that Arab News counted at 8.3 million palms in the province in 2023. Heavy oil, gas and petrochemical demand sits mainly at Yanbu and in the Eastern Province.
