Electronics and industrial automation in Saudi Arabia covers components, ICT and security hardware, robots and PLCs, industrial networks, UPS and power electronics, and sensors, bought by Aramco and SABIC sites, utilities, factories in MODON cities, data centres and giga-projects. This page sets out the six families, where demand sits in Riyadh, the Eastern Province and Jeddah, which SABER, CST, RoHS and NCA rules apply as of 2026, and how to choose a supplier.
Refineries and petrochemical plants run on control systems, so the electronics and industrial automation market in Yanbu is a maintenance and upgrade business. A plant that has operated for a decade or more needs obsolete controllers replaced, instruments recalibrated and networks secured. Yasref is a joint venture of Aramco (62.5 percent) and Sinopec (37.5 percent), and in April 2025 the partners signed a framework agreement to study a petrochemical expansion, which if built would bring a new round of instrumentation and control packages. The same applies to a planned green hydrogen hub, reported in October 2025 to have entered front-end engineering with over 4 GW of electrolysis capacity.
Plant engineers buy programmable logic controllers, safety controllers and relays, sensors and switches and industrial networking gear. Because the sites are hazardous, buyers also ask about industrial firewalls and UPS systems for control rooms. Port and security teams look at CCTV and IP cameras and access control systems. Vibration sensors support condition monitoring of rotating equipment.
Equipment installed in classified areas must carry the right hazardous-area certification. Products need SASO conformity, and wireless devices need approval from the Communications, Space and Technology Commission. Plant owners add their own vendor registration, so a supplier may need to be on an approved list before it can quote. Confirm the details with the end user's procurement office.
Outside the plants, the Royal Commission's city services, the port and the airport buy networks, surveillance and communications gear, which keeps a steady stream of smaller orders for integrators based in Yanbu or Jeddah.
Ask for firmware support dates and spare part availability for ten years. Match the protocol on installed equipment before you choose a gateway. For many small items, post a requirement with part numbers.
Yanbu is three places in one. Yanbu Al-Bahr is the older seafront town where most residents live, Yanbu Al-Nakhal is a separate inland area about 47 km away, and Yanbu Al-Sina'iya in the south holds the industrial city. The industrial city is planned and run by the Royal Commission for Jubail and Yanbu, which was established on 21 September 1975 and answers to the Council of Ministers. Its mission is to plan and manage energy-intensive and petrochemical cities, and gas collected from oil operations is meant to feed their plants. In April 2026 Arab News, citing the commission's annual report, put total investment in the Jubail and Yanbu industrial cities above SR1.5 trillion by the end of 2025, and described Yanbu as a refining and downstream processing centre. Wikipedia lists three refineries, a plastics facility and several petrochemical plants in the city.
The expansion known as Yanbu-2 was launched in July 2005 on about 66 square kilometres, with a plan for 34 basic and secondary industries and 224 light industries. Those are 2005 plan figures. On 9 April 2025 Aramco and Sinopec signed a framework agreement to advance engineering studies for a petrochemical expansion at the Yasref refinery, with a 1.8 million tonne a year steam cracker and a 1.5 million tonne aromatics complex. Aramco described it as a study-phase project.
King Fahd Industrial Port is described as the largest port for loading crude oil and petrochemicals on the Red Sea, with terminals for general cargo and containers, bulk cargo and crude oil. The East-West crude pipeline from the Eastern Province ends here. In May 2026 Mawani, a shipping line and SABIC announced the Red Sea Express container service linking the port with Ain Sokhna in Egypt and Aqaba in Jordan, at up to 1,100 TEU. In December 2025 Mawani signed a SAR 29 million logistics agreement with a logistics company for a 120,500 square metre cargo and storage site at a Yanbu port. The airport has domestic flights to Jeddah, Riyadh and Dammam. Medina lies roughly 160 km east by road, so inland deliveries often route through it.
Inside the industrial city, the Royal Commission handles land, utilities and investor services. Port matters go through Mawani and the port operator, customs through ZATCA, and building permits through the municipality. Fire and life safety approvals come from the General Directorate of Civil Defense, and medical products need Saudi Food and Drug Authority authorisation. Confirm the current steps with each body before you commit to a delivery date.
Refining, petrochemicals and port operations buy valves, pumps, coatings, gases, instrumentation and safety gear. Contractors follow plant shutdowns, and about 332,000 residents (2022 census) support housing, clinics and food supply.
