Pipeline pigs are cleaning, sealing and inspection devices run through a pipe, and pigging equipment is the launcher, receiver and signalling hardware around them. In Saudi Arabia, long trunk lines and a large gas and oil network make traps, pig selection and closure safety the main buying questions covered here.

Pigging equipment covers the pigs, the pig traps (launcher and receiver) with their closures, the valves and kicker lines that feed them, and the signallers that confirm passage. In the Kingdom the same hardware appears on trunk lines for crude, gas and water, on plant inlet and outlet lines, and in the industrial cities at Jubail and Yanbu. This page sits inside pipeline equipment and materials and goes into pig and trap selection.
Specifications written in Saudi Arabia sometimes use the word scraper for a pig, and an engineering forum thread notes this habit, so search your tender documents for both terms before assuming a project has no pigging scope.
| Equipment | Typical Saudi use | Specification points |
|---|---|---|
| Cleaning pigs (foam, mandrel, brush) | Pre-commissioning and routine cleaning of crude and gas lines | Cup and disc material, brush type, bypass ports, line oversize |
| Sealing pigs and spheres | Dewatering after hydrotest, batching liquids | Single or bidirectional, sphere inflation medium |
| Gel pigs | Debris pick-up in long lines, product separation | Batching, debris pick-up, hydrocarbon or dehydrating gel |
| Intelligent pigs | Integrity programmes: geometry, metal loss, cracks, leaks | Tool type, trap length, run speed, line cleanliness |
| Launcher and receiver traps | Every piggable line section | Design pressure, closure and safety lock, nozzles, supports |
| Pig plugs | Isolating a section at pressure during repair | Rated differential, typically up to about 200 bar per PPSA |
If you buy cleaning as a contracted job rather than as hardware, see pipeline cleaning services. The rest of this page is for people buying or specifying the equipment itself.
Run the softest pig that can still do something useful, then step up. On a long line of unknown condition the first pig is usually foam, because it compresses through restrictions and tells you what the debris load is. After that comes a cleaning pig with discs or brushes, then a gauging or geometry pass, and only then an intelligent pig.
Distance changes the planning. On a line of many kilometres a pig can wear out, and debris pushed ahead of it can build into a slug that is hard to receive. Operators therefore run a series of pigs of increasing aggressiveness and watch the volume and type of debris arriving at the receiver. A receiver barrel that cannot hold the debris slug, or a drain that is too small, is a common weakness of traps copied from short plant lines.
Gel trains help with heavy deposits. PPSA lists four gel types: batching or separator gels, debris pick-up gels, hydrocarbon gels and dehydrating gels. A gel can be diluted or gas-cut, and PPSA recommends a conventional pig at the back of the train when displacing with gas. Whether to use gel is a judgement for your pigging contractor, taken with the line profile and the fluid.
Utility pigs are tools; intelligent pigs are instruments. PPSA describes intelligent pigs, also called in-line inspection tools or smart pigs, as devices that collect data on pipe condition, including geometry, metal loss, crack detection, leak detection and mapping. A utility pig never needs data analysis, while an intelligent pig run produces a report that an integrity engineer must interpret.
For Saudi pipelines the practical difference is who owns the risk. If an inspection tool is stuck, the cost is the tool and the shutdown. That is why trap length, valve bore and the preceding cleaning and gauging runs matter. The standard that governs inspection tool qualification is API 1163, which you should name in the inspection contract; the contractor should say how the tool will be qualified for your line and defect types.
Check the code, the closure, and the fit to the line, in that order. PPSA says traps are usually built to the user's specification and that closures are proprietary and critical to the system, with a built-in safety lock that prevents opening while the trap is pressurised.
The US offshore safety alert about a launcher explosion that killed two operators during blowdown of a 16 inch gas line is a reminder of why these items belong in the purchase specification and not only in the site procedure.
Pig traps in the Kingdom sit on open pads where steel surfaces get very hot in summer and wind carries sand across the closure. Heat softens polyurethane, so keep spare pigs under cover and out of sealed metal containers in the sun. Sand on a closure seal face stops the O-ring seating, so ask for dust covers, a spare seal set and a cleaning step in the launch procedure. Hot barrels also matter for people: schedule routine launches for the cooler hours and give operators shade at the trap. None of this is a published rule; it is practice to write into your own operating procedure.
Hardware reaches Saudi projects through regional fabricators, international pigging companies and distributors, with the operator's approved vendor list setting who may bid. As of 2026, a bid to Aramco is scored on more than price: Aramco's procurement vice president described the Dammam artificial lift plant as meeting the iktva initiative, which shows how local content is judged. Check each operator's vendor registration and local content requirements before you invite bids.
ListGCC lists RMA Middle East for pig traps, pig signallers and insulating joints, manufactured in Bahrain close to the Eastern Province. Lead time follows the fabrication slot, closure supply, third party inspection and document review, not the pig. Stock polyurethane pigs ship quickly; a custom trap with a special closure takes months. Include the line diameter, wall thickness, design pressure, fluid and pig types in your requirement post so suppliers can quote traps and pigs together.
