Mecca is a destination first and a factory town second. There is no seaport in the city. Argaam put Jeddah Islamic Port about 70 km from the industrial city and King Abdulaziz International Airport in Jeddah about 88 km away, and the Haramain railway station about 25 km. Jeddah Islamic Port is described as the principal port serving the holy cities and handles about 65 percent of the Kingdom's seaborne imports, so most containers for Mecca clear at Jeddah and finish the journey by truck.
