O-rings and oil seals in Saudi Arabia are the elastomer seals that retain oil, grease, water and process gas in pumps, gearboxes, valves, compressors and vehicles. O-rings seal static joints; oil seals (rotary lip seals) seal turning shafts. This page explains how to pick material and size, what sour gas testing means, how the desert climate affects storage and shaft wear, and how to source seals.

O-rings are round-section elastomer rings that seal under squeeze in a groove, and oil seals are metal-cased lip seals that ride on a rotating shaft. Both fall under the seals and gaskets category in Saudi Arabia, and almost every machine in the Kingdom, from a Jubail process pump to a Riyadh truck gearbox, depends on several of them.
The international standard for the shaft seal is ISO 6194-1:2007, which covers rotary shaft lip-type seals with elastomeric sealing elements. It shows seal types with examples, sets nominal dimensions and tolerances for seal, shaft and housing, and defines an identification code. Its stated suitability is low-pressure conditions, an important limit when a shaft sees pressure.
| Product | Typical Saudi use | What to specify |
|---|---|---|
| Static O-ring | Covers, flanges, valve bonnets and ports on pumps and compressors | Size code, compound, hardness |
| O-ring kit | Fleet and plant maintenance stores | Compound mix and size range |
| Single-lip oil seal | Electric motors, gearboxes, pump bearing housings | Shaft, bore and width, lip material, spring |
| Double-lip oil seal | Mining, quarry and construction plant in dusty duty | Dust lip, grease fill, shaft finish |
| PTFE or cassette seal | Higher speed, aggressive fluid or marginal lubrication | Speed, shaft hardness, pressure |
Cylinder rod and piston profiles are on the hydraulic seals page, flange joints on gasket sheets and spiral wound gaskets, and pump shaft sealing on mechanical seals.
Match the compound to the fluid first, then to temperature and pressure. In Saudi service the fluid range runs from mineral oil and coolant to sour gas and amine, so a single general-purpose compound will not do.
Trelleborg describes NBR as the most common elastomer for oils, relatively resistant to aggressive chemicals, but more sensitive to ageing and abrasion. EPDM resists ozone, UV and heat well, but absorbs oil and weakens. For coolant and water, EPDM is common; for engine and gearbox oil, NBR or a higher-grade rubber is normal.
The CDI Energy Products report lists HNBR and FKM compounds evaluated to ISO 23936-2 in sour multiphase ageing tests and rapid gas decompression testing. In gas processing, a generic compound with no RGD record is a risk: the gas absorbed under pressure can blister the O-ring when pressure drops. Ask for the test report for the exact grade.
ISO 3601-1 sets inside diameters, cross-sections, tolerances and designation codes for O-rings (DIN Media lists the 2012 edition with a corrigendum and 2019 amendment). Inch dash sizes under AS568 also circulate widely, and CDI's tests use AS568-222 and AS568-325 specimens. State the standard on the order to avoid close but wrong sizes.
Heat, sun and sand attack seals before and after installation. Elastomers age in warehouses, so a pallet left in a hot container at a Dammam port yard for weeks can arrive with surface cracking, and sand on shafts wears oil seal lips quickly.
Hot engines, gearboxes and desert vehicle fleets push the choice toward FKM or HNBR. Ask for the continuous service temperature in writing.
These seals are specified to size and material standards in the equipment or project specification, and the commercial gates are SABER for regulated imports and Aramco or owner vendor registration, as of 2026. The seal alone is not normally the regulated product, but check the HS code to be sure.
| Requirement | Applies to | Authority or reference |

| ISO 6194-1:2007 | Rotary shaft lip-type seals: dimensions, tolerances, identification | ISO/TC 131/SC 7 |
| ISO 23936-2 and NORSOK M-710 | Elastomers in oil and gas media: ageing and rapid gas decompression | Independent laboratories |

| Aramco or owner vendor registration | Seals supplied to Aramco and large plant owners | Owner supplier registration |
The SASO and SABER guide explains import certificates. CDI's report is a manufacturer's summary of its own test programme: the RGD test used a 90 percent methane and 10 percent carbon dioxide mix at 100 degrees Celsius and 15 MPa over 7 days with 8 decompression cycles, which shows the kind of evidence upstream buyers request.
Saudi buyers buy from MRO distributors in Riyadh, Jeddah and Dammam for stock sizes, from seal specialists for branded or special compounds, and from the equipment maker for model-specific seals. When the seal sits in a sour gas or high pressure path, buy through a channel that can show the compound and test report.
See rubber seals and gaskets for moulded parts and rubber products for the wider range. Shafts and housings are often paired with bearings. The sourcing guide lists questions for any vendor.
Price follows compound, size and paperwork; lead time follows stock. Common NBR O-rings and metric oil seals are widely stocked, while FKM, HNBR, perfluoroelastomer and tested compounds are generally imported or moulded to order.
Send compound, size code, hardness, fluid and temperature, plus shaft, bore and width for oil seals. To receive several Saudi quotes, post your requirement.
