Gasket sheets and spiral wound gaskets in Saudi Arabia seal bolted pipe flanges across refineries, Jubail and Yanbu petrochemical plants, power and desalination stations. This page shows how to pick winding, filler and rings, which ASME and EN standards the line class calls up, and what Saudi buyers should check, including asbestos rules and Aramco vendor approval, before ordering.

Spiral wound gaskets are rings made from a wound metal strip and soft filler that spring back as flanges move, while gasket sheets are flat jointing material cut into rings. Both belong to the seals and gaskets category in Saudi Arabia, and the correct choice follows the pipe class: the flange standard, pressure class, facing and fluid decide the gasket, not the other way round.
Cut sheet gaskets are used on water, cooling water, low pressure air and steam where Class 150 flanges and modest temperatures apply. Spiral wound gaskets are the standard for hydrocarbon, steam and process lines at higher class in Eastern Province plants. Garlock describes the V-shaped crown in the metal strip as acting like a spring, giving the gasket resilience under varying conditions.
| Type | Typical Saudi use | What to specify |
|---|---|---|
| Compressed non-asbestos fibre sheet | Water, cooling water and low pressure steam in utilities and municipal plant | Grade, thickness, ring or full-face drawing, asbestos-free declaration |
| Reinforced flexible graphite sheet | Steam, thermal oil and heat transfer lines | Reinforcement type, thickness, chloride content |
| Spiral wound, winding only (SW) | Confined joints such as tongue and groove or male and female flanges | Winding metal, filler, thickness |
| Spiral wound with outer ring (RW) | Raised face flanges where centring and compression limiting are needed | Outer ring metal and thickness |
| Spiral wound with inner and outer rings (RWI) | Process, gas and high pressure service, plus vacuum and cycling duty | Inner ring metal, NPS, class, filler |
Equipment such as heat exchangers and pumps often needs its own gasket type, shown on the equipment data sheet. Rotating shaft sealing is covered separately on the mechanical seals page.
Pick the winding metal for corrosion and temperature, the filler for chemistry and heat, and the rings for the flange class and size, then check the combination against ASME B16.20 and your project specification. Do not leave the ring configuration to the stockist.
According to Garlock, ASME B16.20 mandates inner rings on all PTFE filled spiral wound gaskets, on 24 inch NPS and larger in Class 900, on 12 inch and larger in Class 1500 and on 4 inch and larger in Class 2500. Gaskets ordered to B16.20 are sold with inner rings unless the customer states otherwise. Outer centring rings locate the gasket, add radial strength and can limit compression.
The two fillers share the same published m and y factors in Garlock's data (3.00 and 10,000 psi), but graphite needs 2,300 psi of bolt seating stress and PTFE 4,500 psi. That changes the bolting calculation, so state the filler on the datasheet and the purchase order. Graphite suits heat; PTFE suits aggressive chemicals and contamination-sensitive service.
Garlock shows a 0.250 inch winding compressing to roughly 0.180 to 0.200 inch. If the outer ring thickness and winding thickness do not match, the gasket either crushes or never reaches seating stress. Give the supplier the flange face finish and the gasket seating width if the flange is non-standard.
For gaskets the larger risks in the Kingdom are contaminated stock and marine corrosion, not the daytime temperature itself. A spiral wound ring left on a hot yard laydown in Dammam or Jubail picks up sand that scratches the sealing face, and carbon steel rings corrode quickly on Red Sea and Gulf coastal sites.
Joint assembly quality decides more leaks than gasket choice, so ask contractors for tightening records at handover.
Gaskets in Saudi Arabia are specified to ASME, EN or API standards in the piping class, while the commercial gates are SABER for regulated imports and vendor registration for Aramco and other large owners, as of 2026. A plain flange gasket is not normally the regulated part, but check the HS code in the SASO and SABER certificates guide before shipping.
| Requirement | Applies to | Authority or reference |
|---|---|---|
| ASME B16.20-2023 | Ring-joint, spiral-wound and metal jacketed gaskets for ASME B16.5, B16.47 and API 6A flanges | ASME; stabilized maintenance standard |
| ASME B16.21 | Nonmetallic flat gaskets for pipe flanges | ASME |
| EN 1514 series | Gaskets for PN flanges to EN 1092-1 | CEN; European-designed water and power plant |
| ASME PCC-1 | Bolted flange joint assembly procedures | ASME, via plant bolting procedures |
| SABER certificates | Imports whose HS code falls under a SASO technical regulation | SASO |
| Aramco material supplier registration | Gaskets supplied to Aramco projects and plants | Saudi Aramco |
Asbestos is prohibited in the Kingdom, so write "asbestos-free" and the sheet material on every order and ask for a declaration with the delivery. The flanges standards guide explains how classes and facings decide the gasket.
Saudi buyers deal with local gasket fabricators in Dammam, Jubail, Riyadh and Jeddah, authorised distributors of overseas manufacturers for certified material, and MRO stockists. Where the end user is Aramco or another owner with an approved vendor list, confirm that the supplier is registered, and ask which product groups it is registered for.
Around the joint, look at flanges, threaded rods and studs and bolts and nuts. For shaft and cylinder sealing see O-rings and oil seals and hydraulic seals. The guide to sourcing industrial suppliers covers questions to ask any vendor.
Price follows metal, filler, size and paperwork; lead time follows whether the ring is in stock or must be wound to order. Common ASME sizes in stainless steel and graphite are usually available quickly from fabricators, while large diameters, special alloys and inspected batches take longer.
