Nuclear energy equipment in Saudi Arabia today is mostly radiation equipment: sealed sources, gauges, radiography sets, dosimeters and monitors used in oil and gas, construction, research and medicine, all licensed by the Nuclear and Radiological Regulatory Commission (NRRC). This page covers what is bought, how NRRC licensing works, the codes a future power plant supply chain will need, and what sets lead time.
The energy and renewables market in Jeddah has two faces. The first is utility scale: Saudi Electricity Company has brought online parts of its 2,640 MW Jeddah South power plant, described in trade reports as supplying the western region including Mecca and Medina. About 120 km south of the city, the Shuaibah complex combines power and desalination, and its newer phase is reported to be a seawater reverse osmosis plant with a solar farm beside it. The second face is the city itself, where heat and humidity make cooling the largest electricity load. That is why chillers, air handling units, cooling towers and VRF and VRV systems are the most requested items.
For backup power, diesel generators are a standing need in hospitals, malls, towers and factories. Electrical contractors buy substations, power factor correction kits and energy meters for the new industrial and waterfront developments. Solar is growing on rooftops and car parks, so solar panels and modules, solar inverters and solar mounting systems are worth comparing. Coastal salt means mounting steel should be hot dip galvanized or aluminum, and inverters need an enclosure rating suited to dust and humidity.
Grid connection rules for rooftop solar and large loads are set by the electricity regulator and the utility, so ask your installer which approvals apply and who files them. Generator rooms and fuel storage fall under Civil Defense requirements, and permits for outdoor plant on public land come from the municipality. For chillers, ask for performance at the high ambient temperatures of a Jeddah summer, not just at standard rating conditions. Humidity also loads the latent side, so check coil selection and condensate handling. A supplier with technicians based in Jeddah can reach a failed unit the same day, which matters more than a small price gap.
Wind and hydrogen activity is minimal in the city. Utility scale generation sits outside it, so the local market is mainly distribution, cooling, backup and rooftop solar. Use post a requirement to compare offers on a single specification.
Jeddah is the commercial centre of the western Kingdom, and its factories sit in three industrial cities south of the built-up area, all supervised by the Saudi Authority for Industrial Cities and Technology Zones, known as MODON. Saudipedia dates the First Industrial City to 1971, with about twelve million square metres and 1,119 factories, east of Al-Rahmaniyah Market. The Second opened in 2009 west of the Coastal Road, about 30 km from the first. The Third, east of the Coastal Road, is listed with 714 factories and a much larger 80 million square metre footprint, of which 24 million is developed. In August 2024 Argaam reported more than SAR 521 million of new MODON projects there, among them a first-phase wastewater plant of 10,000 cubic metres a day in the Second City and 24 ready-made factories of 350 square metres each in the First.
Jeddah Islamic Port is the main gateway. Wikipedia describes 62 berths in service in 2023 and a share of roughly 65 percent of the Kingdom's seaborne imports, and the port is the western end of the planned Saudi Landbridge. In March 2025 DP World and Mawani inaugurated the expanded South Container Terminal, which lifts capacity from 1.8 to 4 million TEU, and a SAR 900 million, 415,000 square metre logistics park is being built beside it. The airport lies to the north, and trucks carry cargo inland to Mecca, Medina, Taif and Riyadh.
MODON leases plots and ready units. Mawani regulates the port. ZATCA runs customs, and opened an all-in-one customs hall at the port in January 2022. Jeddah Municipality issues trade and building permits, the General Directorate of Civil Defense approves fire and life safety, and the National Water Company runs water and sewage. Confirm current steps on each authority's own platform before contracting.
Construction and fit-out lead because of waterfront and city redevelopment. Food, plastics, packaging, paint and metal plants in the industrial cities buy machinery and spares, while port and logistics operators buy handling gear. Fuel is distributed from Aramco's North Jeddah bulk plant, but refining and heavy petrochemicals sit in other cities.
