Grinding mills and ball mills in Saudi Arabia reduce clinker, gypsum, limestone and ore to powder or fine slurry with media or rollers. This page compares ball mills with vertical roller mills, explains the specification points for Saudi heat, the licensing and SABER points, and what to compare among suppliers for cement and mining projects.

Saudi plants use ball mills for ore and some cement duties and vertical roller mills where energy per tonne drives the choice. A ball mill is a rotating drum where balls cascade and break material by impact and attrition, and in mining it follows crushing and feeds classification and separation. It belongs to the mineral processing equipment range for Saudi Arabia.
A published article from 2014 on the Al Sadiya cement plant, about 150 km south of Jeddah, describes a Loesche LM 56.4 vertical roller mill for raw material grinding with a product rate of 420 tonnes per hour, fineness of 12 per cent residue on a 90 micrometre sieve, and a 3600 kW gearbox. It shows that large Saudi cement lines choose roller mills for raw grinding, while ball mills remain common elsewhere in the circuit and in ore work.
| Mill type | Saudi use | What to specify |
|---|---|---|
| Wet ball mill | Gold, phosphate and base metal ore preparation | Slurry density, feed and product size, liners, media, power |
| Dry ball mill | Cement, gypsum and mineral powder | Compartments, separator, air sweep, dust filter |
| Vertical roller mill | Raw meal, cement, gypsum | Product rate in tonnes per hour, residue on sieve, gearbox kW |
| Laboratory mill | Test work before plant design | Batch size, speed, jar material |
Inland heat and remote locations dominate. Mills run for long periods, so drive, gearbox and lubrication sizing against real summer ambient is the first check, followed by transport limits on shell sections to remote sites.
A mine and its processing operation are licensed by the ministry, and imported mill packages pass SASO conformity where regulated. As of 2026, confirm these points.
| Requirement | Applies to | Authority |
|---|---|---|
| Survey, exploration and mining licence stages | Mine and processing operation | Ministry of Industry and Mineral Resources |
| Foreign investment licence | Non-Saudi investors | Ministry of Investment (MISA) |
| SABER conformity | Regulated products in the mill package, such as electrical items | SASO |
| Customs duty exemptions reported for licensed mining equipment | Imported equipment and spare parts | Ministry and customs; confirm current terms |
The government investor portal describes the licence stages. Read the guide to SASO and SABER certificates for industrial equipment for the import side.
Mills come from original makers and engineering contractors, with distributors handling liners, media and gearbox parts. Upstream crushing is covered by stone crushers and screening plants; MEKA lists jaw, cone and impact crushing plants and Sandvik lists crushing and rock tools. For slurry leaving wet mills, Ruhrpumpen lists slurry and industrial pumps and ITT Goulds Pumps lists vertical and slurry pumps.
Bid comparison should cover shell and trunnion design, liner and media specification and consumption, drive and gearbox, lubrication, instrumentation and spares. Where the circuit continues, compare flotation cells, leaching equipment and gravity separation equipment, because grind size sets their performance. Cement buyers should see Portland cement. Check authorisation with the guide to sourcing industrial suppliers in the UAE and Saudi Arabia.
A grinding circuit is the mill plus everything that feeds it and sizes its product, and the layout decides how much of the plant's energy is wasted on over-grinding. A typical Saudi ore circuit runs in this order:
Fineness matters because every downstream machine depends on it. Flotation works on roughly 2 to 500 micrometre particles, and centrifugal gravity units work below 50 micrometres, so the mill and classifier are tuned to the next stage and not to a general target.
Liners, grinding media and gearbox components wear first, and they set the running cost more than the purchase price does. Media is consumed continuously, so ask for the expected kilograms per tonne from a test and the lead time to bring replacement balls to site. Rubber liners reduce wear and noise but are temperature limited, so confirm that against Saudi summer conditions, and ask for a relining procedure that your maintenance crew can follow. A two-year spares list from the maker, priced and with stocking advice, belongs in every bid.
Shell size, installed power, liners, media, drive and gearbox set price. Lead time follows fabrication, sea freight to Jeddah, Dammam or Jubail, inland haulage of heavy sections and erection. The Al Sadiya article shows the usual cadence of such projects: key parts scheduled for delivery in August 2014 and commercial production expected a year later. Ask for a written schedule, and post your requirement with throughput, feed and product size, and location.
Food and spice milling, which follows halal and hygiene rules, is covered separately under food grinding and milling equipment.
