Greenhouse and protected cultivation equipment in Saudi Arabia means the structures, evaporative and mechanical cooling, hydroponic and vertical farming systems, grow lights and shade houses that let Saudi farms produce vegetables in desert conditions. This page sets out the system types, how the Kingdom's climate and water shape a specification, the codes, SASO conformity and financing that apply, and what drives cost and delivery.
Khobar is a coastal service city, so field agriculture is not the story. Large farms in the Eastern Province are inland, and the governorate itself is built up between Dammam and Dhahran. The agriculture and agri-equipment demand you will see here comes from landscaping, protected cultivation and trading firms that supply farms elsewhere in the province.
The first is landscape irrigation. The city has a waterfront of about 30 km, plus hotel gardens, compounds and median planting, all kept alive on treated water. Contractors look at irrigation systems, drip irrigation systems and irrigation controllers that can be scheduled for night watering. The second is indoor and rooftop growing for restaurants and retail brands, which means hydroponic systems and greenhouse climate control sized for summer heat and humidity near the Gulf. The third is soil work: soil conditioners and fertilisers for planting on sandy or reclaimed ground.
Distributors based in Khobar also quote tractors, sprayers and feed equipment to farm customers in other parts of the Eastern Province, using the city as the sales office while stock ships from warehouses elsewhere. If you need a supplier with field service in the oases, ask where the technicians are actually based.
Imported equipment normally lands at King Abdulaziz Port in Dammam and is trucked into Khobar along the Khobar to Dammam Highway. Seeds, pesticides and fertilisers are regulated products, so ask the supplier which Saudi agricultural authority registration covers the item before you order. Landscaping within the city is subject to Al-Khobar Municipality rules, and plant material is usually sourced through nurseries rather than shipped directly.
Ask for pump and filter data at the water quality you will actually use, since treated effluent and brackish supplies clog emitters faster than clean water. For controllers, check that settings survive power cuts. For protected cultivation, request a cooling load calculation rather than a catalogue figure. Use post a requirement to compare quotes from suppliers who deliver to Khobar.
Khobar is the commercial and residential core of the Dammam metropolitan area, so most of its business is offices, trading, hospitality, healthcare and services rather than heavy plant. The 2022 census counted 409,549 people in the city and 658,550 in the governorate, and the city sits between Dammam and Dhahran, the headquarters of Saudi Aramco, about twenty minutes from each. Its streets follow a grid, with older markets around Suwaiket Street and shopping malls elsewhere. The two universities nearby, King Fahd University of Petroleum and Minerals and Prince Mohammad bin Fahd University, add engineering and research demand.
Factories are a short drive away. Dammam First Industrial City is reported to hold 124 factories, and Dammam Second Industrial City spreads over about 6,000 acres along Highway 615 with some 120 operating plants and more under construction. The Dhahran to Jubail Expressway leads north to Jubail Industrial City for large petrochemical and heavy industry. Khobar buyers usually order from the estates and have goods delivered into town.
Khobar once served as Aramco's early port, but commercial shipping later moved to King Abdulaziz Port in Dammam, which handled about 2.04 million TEU of capacity in 2022, and petroleum exports moved to Ras Tanura. A new waterfront port is described as under construction south of the South Corniche. King Fahd International Airport is roughly 50 km away, reached by the Khobar to Dammam Highway (605). The nearest railway station is in Dammam, on a 449 km line through Abqaiq and Hofuf to Riyadh.
The King Fahd Causeway to Bahrain opened on 25 November 1986 and is about 25 km long. After works completed in June 2020 it reopened for commercial transit traffic, with new gates on the Saudi side. Rules for trucks change, so ask your forwarder for the current customs procedure before you plan a Bahrain leg.
Building and municipal matters fall under Al-Khobar Municipality, one of five municipalities in the Eastern Province Amana, which is headquartered in Dammam and reports to the Ministry of Municipalities and Housing. Factory land and ready units in the industrial cities come through MODON. Private hospitals work with the Ministry of Health, and fire and life safety approvals come from Civil Defense. Customs clearance is handled by ZATCA at the port or border. Check each authority's own platform for the current steps.
Oil and gas contractors and engineering firms keep offices here to be near Aramco. Hospitals, malls, hotels and towers need cooling, security, cleaning and maintenance. The governorate reports eight hospitals with 2,809 beds, and private hospital capacity has kept growing, so medical supply is a steady buyer.
