Explosion proof lighting in Saudi Arabia covers luminaires certified for areas with flammable gas, vapour or dust, from refineries and petrochemical plants to fuel depots. SASO issues a SASOEX certificate based on IECEx or ATEX documents. This page explains zones and markings, Gulf heat limits, owner approvals and what to request from suppliers.
Refineries, a gas terminal and petrochemical units depend on measurement. Yanbu has three oil refineries, according to Wikipedia, and Oil & Gas News described the Samref plant as a 320,000 barrel per day export refinery owned by Aramco. Each plant buys mechanical, electrical and instrumentation supplies such as instrumentation and process control kit in volume: pressure transmitters, flow meters, gas analyzers, SCADA systems and DCS upgrades.
Hazardous areas dominate. Explosion proof motors, explosion proof lighting, medium voltage switchgear, motor control centers and power transformers are specified for process units, while cable trays and power cables go to plant extensions and the industrial area's utility network. Reinforcing steel, glass and titanium dioxide plants add motor and drive demand of a more conventional kind.
Buyers at the refineries expect hazardous area certification marks on every Ex rated item, calibration certificates on instruments, and Aramco or SABIC approved vendor listings. Calibration of installed gauges and analyzers is recurring work, so suppliers with a local calibration equipment capability are valued. Salt laden coastal air shortens the life of unprotected enclosures, so ask for stainless or coated housings and appropriate ingress ratings. Compare offers on one datasheet with post a requirement.
Delivery planning matters as much as the datasheet. Instruments and switchgear usually arrive through King Fahd Industrial Port, and a missed shutdown window can cost a plant far more than the part itself. Ask for ex stock availability in Saudi Arabia, commissioning support from the maker, and spare parts lists that cover the first two years. Large panels should be factory tested with the buyer's witness, so agree the inspection dates early.
Yanbu is three places in one. Yanbu Al-Bahr is the older seafront town where most residents live, Yanbu Al-Nakhal is a separate inland area about 47 km away, and Yanbu Al-Sina'iya in the south holds the industrial city. The industrial city is planned and run by the Royal Commission for Jubail and Yanbu, which was established on 21 September 1975 and answers to the Council of Ministers. Its mission is to plan and manage energy-intensive and petrochemical cities, and gas collected from oil operations is meant to feed their plants. In April 2026 Arab News, citing the commission's annual report, put total investment in the Jubail and Yanbu industrial cities above SR1.5 trillion by the end of 2025, and described Yanbu as a refining and downstream processing centre. Wikipedia lists three refineries, a plastics facility and several petrochemical plants in the city.
The expansion known as Yanbu-2 was launched in July 2005 on about 66 square kilometres, with a plan for 34 basic and secondary industries and 224 light industries. Those are 2005 plan figures. On 9 April 2025 Aramco and Sinopec signed a framework agreement to advance engineering studies for a petrochemical expansion at the Yasref refinery, with a 1.8 million tonne a year steam cracker and a 1.5 million tonne aromatics complex. Aramco described it as a study-phase project.
King Fahd Industrial Port is described as the largest port for loading crude oil and petrochemicals on the Red Sea, with terminals for general cargo and containers, bulk cargo and crude oil. The East-West crude pipeline from the Eastern Province ends here. In May 2026 Mawani, a shipping line and SABIC announced the Red Sea Express container service linking the port with Ain Sokhna in Egypt and Aqaba in Jordan, at up to 1,100 TEU. In December 2025 Mawani signed a SAR 29 million logistics agreement with a logistics company for a 120,500 square metre cargo and storage site at a Yanbu port. The airport has domestic flights to Jeddah, Riyadh and Dammam. Medina lies roughly 160 km east by road, so inland deliveries often route through it.
Inside the industrial city, the Royal Commission handles land, utilities and investor services. Port matters go through Mawani and the port operator, customs through ZATCA, and building permits through the municipality. Fire and life safety approvals come from the General Directorate of Civil Defense, and medical products need Saudi Food and Drug Authority authorisation. Confirm the current steps with each body before you commit to a delivery date.
Refining, petrochemicals and port operations buy valves, pumps, coatings, gases, instrumentation and safety gear. Contractors follow plant shutdowns, and about 332,000 residents (2022 census) support housing, clinics and food supply.
