Ethylene and propylene plants in Saudi Arabia are steam crackers in Jubail, Yanbu and Rabigh that supply the polyolefin, glycol and chemical units around them. This page covers the equipment inside a cracker, how feed choice shapes it, the codes buyers cite, who supplies it and what drives lead time for owners and contractors.
Few cities are as tied to the oil, gas and petrochemicals sector as the Dhahran, Dammam and Khobar metro area. Dhahran holds the headquarters, Dammam the port, Jubail the big plants, and Khobar the contractor and vendor offices in between.
Khobar is next to Dhahran, where Saudi Aramco has its headquarters, and it has long been the commercial base for firms that work for the oil company. Operating companies, engineering contractors and oilfield service firms keep offices here, while the rigs, workshops and plants are in the fields, at Dammam and at Jubail. For the national picture see oil, gas and petrochemicals.
The common orders are oilfield services and rental equipment, plus wireline, well testing and drilling equipment. Plant maintenance buyers look for pipeline valves and gas compressors. Procurement is run by contractor and vendor offices in the city, who then send goods to the field or to a yard in Dammam. A few specialist workshops sit in the industrial areas of the Khobar and Dammam metro area, near customers.
Expect Aramco style vendor registration, quality system audits and third party inspection on pressure parts and well equipment. Suppliers usually need to show an approved manufacturer relationship, API or equivalent certification for the product, and documented traceability. Ask for the data sheet, the certificate pack and the inspection hold points before pricing, and keep the order's local content expectations in view. Wellhead and drilling items are supplied against detailed specifications, so compare quotes on identical data.
Use the guide on choosing industrial valves in the GCC for valve selection, or post a requirement to compare vendors.
Lead times for forged and cast pressure parts can be long, so ask for the dated shipping plan, not only a delivery estimate.
Khobar is the commercial and residential core of the Dammam metropolitan area, so most of its business is offices, trading, hospitality, healthcare and services rather than heavy plant. The 2022 census counted 409,549 people in the city and 658,550 in the governorate, and the city sits between Dammam and Dhahran, the headquarters of Saudi Aramco, about twenty minutes from each. Its streets follow a grid, with older markets around Suwaiket Street and shopping malls elsewhere. The two universities nearby, King Fahd University of Petroleum and Minerals and Prince Mohammad bin Fahd University, add engineering and research demand.
Factories are a short drive away. Dammam First Industrial City is reported to hold 124 factories, and Dammam Second Industrial City spreads over about 6,000 acres along Highway 615 with some 120 operating plants and more under construction. The Dhahran to Jubail Expressway leads north to Jubail Industrial City for large petrochemical and heavy industry. Khobar buyers usually order from the estates and have goods delivered into town.
Khobar once served as Aramco's early port, but commercial shipping later moved to King Abdulaziz Port in Dammam, which handled about 2.04 million TEU of capacity in 2022, and petroleum exports moved to Ras Tanura. A new waterfront port is described as under construction south of the South Corniche. King Fahd International Airport is roughly 50 km away, reached by the Khobar to Dammam Highway (605). The nearest railway station is in Dammam, on a 449 km line through Abqaiq and Hofuf to Riyadh.
The King Fahd Causeway to Bahrain opened on 25 November 1986 and is about 25 km long. After works completed in June 2020 it reopened for commercial transit traffic, with new gates on the Saudi side. Rules for trucks change, so ask your forwarder for the current customs procedure before you plan a Bahrain leg.
Building and municipal matters fall under Al-Khobar Municipality, one of five municipalities in the Eastern Province Amana, which is headquartered in Dammam and reports to the Ministry of Municipalities and Housing. Factory land and ready units in the industrial cities come through MODON. Private hospitals work with the Ministry of Health, and fire and life safety approvals come from Civil Defense. Customs clearance is handled by ZATCA at the port or border. Check each authority's own platform for the current steps.
Oil and gas contractors and engineering firms keep offices here to be near Aramco. Hospitals, malls, hotels and towers need cooling, security, cleaning and maintenance. The governorate reports eight hospitals with 2,809 beds, and private hospital capacity has kept growing, so medical supply is a steady buyer.
