Cooling towers in Saudi Arabia reject heat from water-cooled chillers, district cooling plants, refineries, petrochemical units and power plants by evaporating part of the circulating water. This page explains tower types and materials, how Saudi climate and water scarcity shape selection, the performance tests and project approvals buyers use as of 2026, the brands available and what drives cost and lead time.
Yanbu is an energy city. Its refineries use large steam and power systems, and the East-West crude pipeline ends at King Fahd Industrial Port, which Wikipedia describes as the largest port for loading crude oil and petrochemicals on the Red Sea. For the energy and renewables sector this means power generation and cooling inside process plants, standby supply for the port and city, and a wave of planned new energy projects. A green hydrogen hub in the industrial city was reported on 1 October 2025 as entering front-end engineering, with over 4 GW of electrolysis capacity and 400,000 tonnes a year of hydrogen at full capacity. No build dates were given, so confirm status before you quote.
Buyers look at gas turbines, steam turbines, cogeneration systems and substations for plant utilities. Cooling towers and chillers support process and building loads in 40 C summers. Diesel generators provide standby for hospitals, the port and control rooms, while green hydrogen production and solar EPC services are emerging categories. Energy meters and monitoring help tenants report usage.
Inside the industrial city, utilities are provided under the Royal Commission's framework, so grid and water connections follow its tenant procedures. Outside it, Saudi Electricity Company connects customers. Generating sets need civil defence approval for fuel storage, and equipment needs SASO conformity. Ask each supplier for derating at ambient heat and coastal humidity.
Demand for reserve power also comes from the airport, the hospitals and the districts of Yanbu Al-Bahr, where outages in 40 C heat quickly become a safety issue. Planned solar or wind equipment for the hydrogen project would be ordered by its developer, not by local distributors.
Specify salt-protected enclosures and stainless fasteners for coastal sites. For turbines and large packages, check the local service base before you buy. Use post a requirement to compare generator quotes on one sheet.
Yanbu is three places in one. Yanbu Al-Bahr is the older seafront town where most residents live, Yanbu Al-Nakhal is a separate inland area about 47 km away, and Yanbu Al-Sina'iya in the south holds the industrial city. The industrial city is planned and run by the Royal Commission for Jubail and Yanbu, which was established on 21 September 1975 and answers to the Council of Ministers. Its mission is to plan and manage energy-intensive and petrochemical cities, and gas collected from oil operations is meant to feed their plants. In April 2026 Arab News, citing the commission's annual report, put total investment in the Jubail and Yanbu industrial cities above SR1.5 trillion by the end of 2025, and described Yanbu as a refining and downstream processing centre. Wikipedia lists three refineries, a plastics facility and several petrochemical plants in the city.
The expansion known as Yanbu-2 was launched in July 2005 on about 66 square kilometres, with a plan for 34 basic and secondary industries and 224 light industries. Those are 2005 plan figures. On 9 April 2025 Aramco and Sinopec signed a framework agreement to advance engineering studies for a petrochemical expansion at the Yasref refinery, with a 1.8 million tonne a year steam cracker and a 1.5 million tonne aromatics complex. Aramco described it as a study-phase project.
King Fahd Industrial Port is described as the largest port for loading crude oil and petrochemicals on the Red Sea, with terminals for general cargo and containers, bulk cargo and crude oil. The East-West crude pipeline from the Eastern Province ends here. In May 2026 Mawani, a shipping line and SABIC announced the Red Sea Express container service linking the port with Ain Sokhna in Egypt and Aqaba in Jordan, at up to 1,100 TEU. In December 2025 Mawani signed a SAR 29 million logistics agreement with a logistics company for a 120,500 square metre cargo and storage site at a Yanbu port. The airport has domestic flights to Jeddah, Riyadh and Dammam. Medina lies roughly 160 km east by road, so inland deliveries often route through it.
Inside the industrial city, the Royal Commission handles land, utilities and investor services. Port matters go through Mawani and the port operator, customs through ZATCA, and building permits through the municipality. Fire and life safety approvals come from the General Directorate of Civil Defense, and medical products need Saudi Food and Drug Authority authorisation. Confirm the current steps with each body before you commit to a delivery date.
Refining, petrochemicals and port operations buy valves, pumps, coatings, gases, instrumentation and safety gear. Contractors follow plant shutdowns, and about 332,000 residents (2022 census) support housing, clinics and food supply.
