Automated storage and retrieval systems (AS/RS) in Saudi Arabia are machine-run stores in which stacker cranes, shuttles, vertical lifts or robots move loads in and out of racking and deliver them to picking stations. This page explains the types Saudi buyers specify, when automation pays, the SASO machinery rules and EN 528 as of 2026, and what drives cost and delivery.
Yanbu is a port first and a city second. Freight for the logistics and material handling sector lands at King Fahd Industrial Port, which has three terminals (general cargo and containers, bulk, and crude oil) and 34 berths, and at Yanbu Commercial Port. Both are run by the Saudi Ports Authority (Mawani). In February 2024 Mawani added anchorage areas that raised the number of ships the port can hold offshore from 5 to 27. Since May 2026 the Red Sea Express, a 1,100 TEU container service launched by Mawani with a shipping line and SABIC, links the port directly to Ain Sokhna in Egypt and Aqaba in Jordan.
Plants in Yanbu Industrial City ship out polymers, fuels and building materials and bring in heavy modules, so demand is for project cargo services, heavy haulage and transport, customs clearance and container shipping. Inside the plants and yards, forklifts, lifting equipment and pallet racking are bought for maintenance stores and product warehouses. Overland, Medina is about 160 km to the east, and Jeddah is the larger consolidation point down the coast, so many buyers combine a Yanbu delivery with a Jeddah transshipment.
Ask whether the carrier has handled lifts and low-bed moves inside the Royal Commission industrial area, because access, escorts and site safety inductions are set by each plant and by the commission. For equipment imports, confirm the customs broker clears at the specific Yanbu port you are using, since the commercial and industrial ports are separate. Request axle load and route surveys for oversize moves, and agree who pays demurrage if a plant gate slot slips. Compare quotes side by side with post a requirement.
Yanbu is three places in one. Yanbu Al-Bahr is the older seafront town where most residents live, Yanbu Al-Nakhal is a separate inland area about 47 km away, and Yanbu Al-Sina'iya in the south holds the industrial city. The industrial city is planned and run by the Royal Commission for Jubail and Yanbu, which was established on 21 September 1975 and answers to the Council of Ministers. Its mission is to plan and manage energy-intensive and petrochemical cities, and gas collected from oil operations is meant to feed their plants. In April 2026 Arab News, citing the commission's annual report, put total investment in the Jubail and Yanbu industrial cities above SR1.5 trillion by the end of 2025, and described Yanbu as a refining and downstream processing centre. Wikipedia lists three refineries, a plastics facility and several petrochemical plants in the city.
The expansion known as Yanbu-2 was launched in July 2005 on about 66 square kilometres, with a plan for 34 basic and secondary industries and 224 light industries. Those are 2005 plan figures. On 9 April 2025 Aramco and Sinopec signed a framework agreement to advance engineering studies for a petrochemical expansion at the Yasref refinery, with a 1.8 million tonne a year steam cracker and a 1.5 million tonne aromatics complex. Aramco described it as a study-phase project.
King Fahd Industrial Port is described as the largest port for loading crude oil and petrochemicals on the Red Sea, with terminals for general cargo and containers, bulk cargo and crude oil. The East-West crude pipeline from the Eastern Province ends here. In May 2026 Mawani, a shipping line and SABIC announced the Red Sea Express container service linking the port with Ain Sokhna in Egypt and Aqaba in Jordan, at up to 1,100 TEU. In December 2025 Mawani signed a SAR 29 million logistics agreement with a logistics company for a 120,500 square metre cargo and storage site at a Yanbu port. The airport has domestic flights to Jeddah, Riyadh and Dammam. Medina lies roughly 160 km east by road, so inland deliveries often route through it.
Inside the industrial city, the Royal Commission handles land, utilities and investor services. Port matters go through Mawani and the port operator, customs through ZATCA, and building permits through the municipality. Fire and life safety approvals come from the General Directorate of Civil Defense, and medical products need Saudi Food and Drug Authority authorisation. Confirm the current steps with each body before you commit to a delivery date.
Refining, petrochemicals and port operations buy valves, pumps, coatings, gases, instrumentation and safety gear. Contractors follow plant shutdowns, and about 332,000 residents (2022 census) support housing, clinics and food supply.
