Automated storage and retrieval systems (AS/RS) in Saudi Arabia are machine-run stores in which stacker cranes, shuttles, vertical lifts or robots move loads in and out of racking and deliver them to picking stations. This page explains the types Saudi buyers specify, when automation pays, the SASO machinery rules and EN 528 as of 2026, and what drives cost and delivery.
Mecca is not a port city, so logistics and material handling here is a story of the last 70 kilometres. Containers and break bulk land at Jeddah Islamic Port, then move by road to Mecca. MODON's description of its second industrial city in Al-Akashiya, reported in 2021, put the port at about 70 km and the Haramain train station at about 25 km, with the Holy Mosque about 20 km away. Ask any carrier whether a delivery is priced to the port, to the Al-Akashiya gate or to your own site.
Demand comes from warehouses that feed hotels, pilgrim services and retail, plus the factories being built in the industrial city. Typical purchases are forklifts, pallet racking, dock levelers and freight forwarding. A cold or ambient store that serves food for visitors needs racking rated for the pallet weight and a layout that lets trucks load fast in the heat. For heavy plant, low-bed trailers and heavy haulage are booked from Jeddah.
Truck movement into the city centre and the holy sites is controlled during the season, so large deliveries are planned around the published operating periods. Confirm timings and permits with the carrier before you commit to an installation date. Equipment suppliers who keep spare batteries, tyres and hydraulic parts in the Jeddah and Mecca corridor save you the most downtime.
Give suppliers the pallet size, rack height, floor flatness and aisle width, then ask who services the unit on the western side of the kingdom. Where several quotes are needed, post a requirement once and compare delivered prices.
Space inside the city is tight and costly, which pushes bulk storage to the outskirts and the new industrial city while small just-in-time stores stay near hotels. Choose narrow aisle trucks or reach trucks only where ceiling height and floor quality allow, and keep charging areas ventilated. Pallet and carton flow in a store feeding catering and retail is often seasonal, so adjustable racking is a safer purchase than fixed layouts.
Mecca is a destination first and a factory town second. Most of what the city consumes, from building materials to hospital supplies, is made elsewhere and brought in, and the industrial land that does exist sits on the outer edge. The main site is the Second Industrial City of Makkah in the Al-Akashiya district, which MODON, the Saudi Authority for Industrial Cities and Technology Zones, began handing over in July 2021. Argaam reported an area of about 45.4 million square meters on the Fifth Ring Road where the Makkah, Taif and Jeddah roads meet, roughly 20 km from the Holy Mosque.
In November 2024 MODON signed a contract with a private developer for a ready-built industrial complex in Makkah, over 1.3 million square meters and SR1.75 billion, which Arab News described as MODON's first privately developed complex. Its stated aims were 5,000 jobs and up to 60 percent of output for export. Treat these as announced targets and ask for current occupancy before you plan around them.
There is no seaport in the city. Argaam put Jeddah Islamic Port about 70 km from the industrial city and King Abdulaziz International Airport in Jeddah about 88 km away, and the Haramain railway station about 25 km. Jeddah Islamic Port is described as the principal port serving the holy cities and handles about 65 percent of the Kingdom's seaborne imports, so most containers for Mecca clear at Jeddah and finish the journey by truck. For heavy industry, port services and large stockists, go to the Jeddah market first.
Holy Makkah Municipality, which sits under the Ministry of Municipalities and Housing, handles permits, waste and food inspections, including the seasonal controls in the Hajj period. MODON deals with factory land. Medical devices are regulated by the Saudi Food and Drug Authority, and fire and life safety approvals come from the General Directorate of Civil Defense. Confirm each step on the authority's own platform.
Demand follows pilgrim numbers: hotels, catering, cleaning, cooling, hospital supplies and construction near the Holy Mosque. Heavy industry is thin here, and oil, gas and petrochemical buyers are in the Eastern Province. Use the sector pages below for the Mecca view of each trade.
