Sensors and switches in Saudi Arabia are the proximity, photoelectric and limit switches, encoders, load cells, inclination and vibration sensors that feed control systems in plants, mines, warehouses and food factories. This page covers each type, selection for Saudi heat, dust and washdown, the approvals that apply as of 2026 (SABER, SASOEX, IEC 60947-5, GSO OIML R 60) and what drives cost and delivery, with Saudi suppliers below.
Jeddah is mainly a buyer and integrator of electronics and industrial automation, not a chip or board maker. Demand comes from places that run on controls: the food and plastics plants in the MODON industrial cities, the container and bulk terminals at Jeddah Islamic Port, desalination and power sites south of the city, and the aviation maintenance work around King Abdulaziz International Airport. In February 2025 MODON launched Aero Park I, a 1.2 million square meter aviation industrial city at Modon Oasis next to the airport and the port, with licences going to aircraft maintenance companies. That adds demand for test, sensing and communication equipment.
Plant engineers ask for programmable logic controllers, proximity sensors, power supplies and converters and UPS systems, because brief grid dips are costly on filling and packing lines. Port, hospital and mall operators buy CCTV and IP surveillance cameras and access control systems. Warehouse operators in the new logistics parks look for rugged tablets and handheld computers, industrial wireless access points and structured cabling.
Electronics fail early in damp, salty air. Ask for conformal coated boards, stainless or fiberglass enclosures with a suitable ingress rating, and sealed cable glands for anything outdoors or near the water. Panel builders in Jeddah often specify air conditioned or filtered cabinets in plants where dust and humidity are both present. Heat is the second issue, so check derating curves on drives and power supplies, not just the nameplate rating.
Local stock of industrial networking, safety relays and sensors exists but is shallow, and many items ship from the Riyadh and Dammam distributors or arrive by air. Ask suppliers for the lead time of the exact part number, and confirm that products carry the conformity marking needed for import into the Kingdom. Request a firmware and software licence statement for PLCs and gateways, and check who supports the system after commissioning. For a quote comparison on a control panel bill of materials, use post a requirement.
Jeddah is the commercial centre of the western Kingdom, and its factories sit in three industrial cities south of the built-up area, all supervised by the Saudi Authority for Industrial Cities and Technology Zones, known as MODON. Saudipedia dates the First Industrial City to 1971, with about twelve million square metres and 1,119 factories, east of Al-Rahmaniyah Market. The Second opened in 2009 west of the Coastal Road, about 30 km from the first. The Third, east of the Coastal Road, is listed with 714 factories and a much larger 80 million square metre footprint, of which 24 million is developed. In August 2024 Argaam reported more than SAR 521 million of new MODON projects there, among them a first-phase wastewater plant of 10,000 cubic metres a day in the Second City and 24 ready-made factories of 350 square metres each in the First.
Jeddah Islamic Port is the main gateway. Wikipedia describes 62 berths in service in 2023 and a share of roughly 65 percent of the Kingdom's seaborne imports, and the port is the western end of the planned Saudi Landbridge. In March 2025 DP World and Mawani inaugurated the expanded South Container Terminal, which lifts capacity from 1.8 to 4 million TEU, and a SAR 900 million, 415,000 square metre logistics park is being built beside it. The airport lies to the north, and trucks carry cargo inland to Mecca, Medina, Taif and Riyadh.
MODON leases plots and ready units. Mawani regulates the port. ZATCA runs customs, and opened an all-in-one customs hall at the port in January 2022. Jeddah Municipality issues trade and building permits, the General Directorate of Civil Defense approves fire and life safety, and the National Water Company runs water and sewage. Confirm current steps on each authority's own platform before contracting.
Construction and fit-out lead because of waterfront and city redevelopment. Food, plastics, packaging, paint and metal plants in the industrial cities buy machinery and spares, while port and logistics operators buy handling gear. Fuel is distributed from Aramco's North Jeddah bulk plant, but refining and heavy petrochemicals sit in other cities.
