Scrap metal recycling in Saudi Arabia is the collection, processing and sale of ferrous and non-ferrous scrap to mills, smelters and exporters. The city sits inland in an arid valley and serves very large numbers of residents and pilgrims, so water and environmental services are among its biggest purchases. NWC's Western Cluster announced in January 2025 more than SAR 1.6 billion of work in Makkah, including replacing main water lines on the Third Ring Road and installing 29 km of mains across 16 districts. Seawater is desalinated on the Red Sea coast and pumped up to the city.
Buyers look for water tanks and reservoirs, water pumping stations, water filtration systems, water pipeline materials and sewage treatment plants. Hotels and large buildings usually keep their own storage, pumps and treatment, so there is steady demand for reverse osmosis systems and grease traps for kitchens.
Arab News reported on 28 May 2026 that Makkah Municipality, under the Ministry of Municipalities and Housing, removed more than 16,000 tonnes of waste at the holy sites during Hajj using over 22,000 workers, 123 compactors and 1,235 compacting bins. That sets the scale for waste management here: collection fleets, compactors, balers and recycling points are all in regular demand.
Ask for flow rates at peak occupancy, spare pump availability and service response. Confirm treatment and discharge requirements with NWC and the municipality. Storage capacity, backup pumping and water quality testing are the weak points when demand peaks. Schedule tank cleaning and disinfection, and keep spare pumps and valves on site. For wastewater, kitchens need grease interceptors maintained on a regular programme, and sludge or grease collection should be carried out by a licensed contractor.
Mecca is a destination first and a factory town second. Most of what the city consumes, from building materials to hospital supplies, is made elsewhere and brought in, and the industrial land that does exist sits on the outer edge. The main site is the Second Industrial City of Makkah in the Al-Akashiya district, which MODON, the Saudi Authority for Industrial Cities and Technology Zones, began handing over in July 2021. Argaam reported an area of about 45.4 million square meters on the Fifth Ring Road where the Makkah, Taif and Jeddah roads meet, roughly 20 km from the Holy Mosque.
In November 2024 MODON signed a contract with a private developer for a ready-built industrial complex in Makkah, over 1.3 million square meters and SR1.75 billion, which Arab News described as MODON's first privately developed complex. Its stated aims were 5,000 jobs and up to 60 percent of output for export. Treat these as announced targets and ask for current occupancy before you plan around them.
There is no seaport in the city. Argaam put Jeddah Islamic Port about 70 km from the industrial city and King Abdulaziz International Airport in Jeddah about 88 km away, and the Haramain railway station about 25 km. Jeddah Islamic Port is described as the principal port serving the holy cities and handles about 65 percent of the Kingdom's seaborne imports, so most containers for Mecca clear at Jeddah and finish the journey by truck. Holy Makkah Municipality, which sits under the Ministry of Municipalities and Housing, handles permits, waste and food inspections, including the seasonal controls in the Hajj period. MODON deals with factory land. Medical devices are regulated by the Saudi Food and Drug Authority, and fire and life safety approvals come from the General Directorate of Civil Defense.
