Which rock wool insulation products do Saudi buyers specify?

Saudi projects buy rock wool in five main forms: slabs for walls and facades, rolls and blankets for partitions and ceilings, roof boards, pipe sections, and wired mats for vessels and large pipes. The fibre is spun from molten stone, which gives it a high service temperature and non-combustible grades. On ListGCC it is part of thermal insulation suppliers in Saudi Arabia; this page covers what is particular to stone wool.

FormWhere Saudi projects use itKey specification points
High-density slabsRainscreen facades and cladding in Riyadh and Jeddah towers, fire-rated walls in hospitals and mallsFire class, density, water repellency, the tested system it belongs to
Low-density slabs, blankets and rollsDrywall partitions, ceiling voids, acoustic lining in housing and officesDensity matched to the fire or acoustic test, thickness, facing
Roof slabsSteel-framed warehouses and factories in MODON industrial cities and SudairCompressive strength, dimensional stability, membrane compatibility
Pipe sectionsSteam, condensate and hot process lines in Jubail and Yanbu, building hot waterService temperature, pipe outside diameter, chloride limit for stainless steel, facing
Wired mats and blanketsColumns, drums, boilers, heat exchangers and flue ductsService temperature, mesh material, density, jacketing

Rock wool competes with neighbouring products by duty. Light HVAC duct wrap and ceiling rolls are often glass wool insulation for ducts and building rolls. Chilled water networks and cold stores usually take PIR and PUR insulation because closed cells resist condensation. Walls of insulated blockwork and inverted roofs often use XPS and EPS boards.

Which standards and approvals apply to rock wool insulation in Saudi Arabia?

As of 2026, rock wool in Saudi Arabia must meet SASO technical regulations for insulation and building materials, with imports certified through SABER, and the installed build-up must meet the energy conservation parts of the Saudi Building Code. Product properties are declared to ASTM or EN standards, and industrial owners add their own specifications.

SASO announced that updated thermal insulation standards and technical regulations would take mandatory effect on 25 November 2014 for both local and imported products. In April 2018 it reviewed the Building Materials Technical Regulation, whose second part covers insulation and cladding materials, and said non-conforming products may not be made, imported or displayed. For imported rock wool, ask the exporter to confirm the SABER certificates for the HS code before shipping; our guide to SASO and SABER certificates explains the Product and Shipment Certificates. Confirm current requirements with SASO, as the regulations are revised.

The GCC has adopted ASTM C612 as GSO ASTM C612:2010, based on the 2009 edition, while ASTM itself has since published C612-25. The ASTM scope covers rock, slag and glass fibre boards for surfaces from minus 18 °C to 982 °C and excludes the performance of hourly-rated fire systems, so wall and facade fire ratings still come from system tests.

How do Saudi plants and climates change the rock wool you order?

In Saudi Arabia, the right rock wool depends on whether it goes on a hot process line on the Gulf or Red Sea coast, a humid building in Jeddah or Dammam, or a dusty inland roof in Riyadh. Water and chlorides cause most trouble on the coast; heat and dust dominate inland.

Jubail, Yanbu and Ras Tanura process plants

Hot lines and vessels in the industrial cities run above 100 °C for long periods, often in salty air. Corrosion under insulation is the main risk, so owners focus on water repellent grades, chloride content and jacketing. ROCKWOOL describes its ProRox PS 960 pipe section binder, WR-Tech, as water repellent to mitigate CUI, and declares 10 ppm or less of water leachable chloride with results inside ASTM C795 limits. Ask for the owner's insulation specification and approved manufacturer list from the EPC contractor before requesting quotes.

Facings and surface temperature

Aluminium-faced sections have a facing temperature limit well below the wool's rating; one Saint-Gobain ISOVER stone wool pipe section rated to 600 °C caps the aluminium side at 100 °C. The facing also changes the fire class, from A1L unfaced to A2L-s1, d0 for that product, which matters if the consultant has written A1.

Inland roofs and storage

On Riyadh and Qassim roofs, dense boards must carry foot traffic and plant, and dust gets into unsealed joints. On every site, keep stock covered and off the ground; wet or crushed rock wool should be rejected at delivery.

Who supplies rock wool insulation in Saudi Arabia?

Saudi buyers get rock wool from manufacturers inside the Kingdom, from other GCC producers, and from international brands through Saudi distributors and stockists in Riyadh, Jeddah and Dammam. Local production matters because it shortens delivery and avoids import conformity steps.

Brands carried on ListGCC include Gulf Insulation Group, a Saudi producer of rock and glass mineral wool; ROCKWOOL stone wool for building and process insulation; Paroc technical and building stone wool, owned by Owens Corning; Knauf Insulation rock and glass mineral wool; KIMMCO-ISOVER from Kuwait; and Izocam stone wool from Turkey.

  • Is the product made in the Kingdom, elsewhere in the GCC or overseas, and are SABER certificates in place for imports?
  • Do the declared conductivity and thickness meet the SBC 601 or SBC 602 calculation?
  • Which fire test report covers the product and facing, and in which wall or facade system?
  • For plant work, is the product on the owner's approved list, and is there a chloride test result?

For supply and installation, see insulation contractors in Saudi Arabia; for HVAC packages, ductwork and duct insulation suppliers. When quantities are ready, post your requirement so several Saudi suppliers quote on the same documents.

What affects the price and lead time of rock wool insulation in Saudi Arabia?

Saudi rock wool prices depend on density, thickness, facing and fire grade, and lead time depends mostly on local stock and, for imports, conformity paperwork. Because stone wool is bulky, haulage distance from the plant or port also shows up in the price.

  • Local or imported: Saudi-made grades are usually quicker; imports wait on shipping and SABER clearance through Jeddah Islamic Port, King Abdulaziz Port in Dammam or Jubail Commercial Port.
  • Density and grade: facade, roof and process grades cost more than partition rolls.
  • Pipe section range: odd diameters and thick sections often need a production slot.
  • Facings, mesh and jacketing: foil, wire mesh and metal cladding add cost and time.
  • Owner documentation: approvals, inspection plans and test reports for plant projects.

Ask suppliers to separate material, freight and certification costs in their quotes.

Frequently Asked Questions — Rock Wool Insulation

Is rock wool insulation made in Saudi Arabia?
Yes. Rock wool insulation is produced inside Saudi Arabia, including by Gulf Insulation Group, and imported from other GCC states and overseas. Saudi-made rock wool usually delivers faster and avoids import conformity steps, but check that the grade, density and fire test match your specification.
Does imported rock wool need a SABER certificate?
Imported rock wool insulation falls under SASO thermal insulation and building materials regulations as of 2026, so the importer normally needs SABER product and shipment certificates for the HS code. Confirm the requirement for your product on SABER before shipping, because rules and code lists are revised.
Which rock wool is used on hot pipes in Jubail and Yanbu?
Hot process lines in Jubail and Yanbu typically use rock wool pipe sections and wired mats rated above the operating temperature, with water repellent binders, low leachable chloride for stainless steel and metal jacketing. The plant owner's insulation specification and approved manufacturer list decide the exact product.
What standard covers rock wool boards in Saudi Arabia?
Rock wool boards are often specified to ASTM C612, which the GCC adopted as GSO ASTM C612:2010, or to EN 13162 for buildings and EN 14303 for equipment. SASO technical regulations apply on top, and fire ratings come from tests on the complete wall or facade system.
Why does the facing matter on rock wool pipe sections?
An aluminium facing has a much lower temperature limit than the rock wool and can lower the fire class. One stone wool pipe section rated to 600 °C limits the aluminium side to 100 °C and is A2L-s1, d0 when faced, against A1L unfaced.
Does rock wool help meet SBC 602 in Saudi homes?
Rock wool can help meet SBC 602, the residential energy conservation code, when its declared thermal conductivity and thickness achieve the maximum U-value set for the climate zone. The designer's calculation sets the requirement; the supplier must deliver the declared values used in that calculation.
What drives rock wool lead times in Saudi Arabia?
Rock wool lead times in Saudi Arabia depend on local stock, production slots for special densities and pipe sizes, shipping through Jeddah, Dammam or Jubail for imports, and SABER clearance. Plant projects also need owner approvals and test documents before release, which can take longer than production.
