Polyethylene granules in Saudi Arabia are the HDPE, LDPE and LLDPE pellets that converters in Riyadh, Dammam, Jeddah and Sudair melt into film, pipe, drums, sacks and moulded goods. This page is the converter's guide: how to match grade to process, how to receive and store lots, what documents to ask for and what moves price and lead time.
Yanbu is the resin side of the chain. The city has petrochemical plants and a plastics facility according to Wikipedia, and since May 2026 the Red Sea Express container service has given Yanbu shippers a direct link to Ain Sokhna and Aqaba. For buyers in plastics, rubber and packaging, that means polyethylene granules and polypropylene granules are produced locally, then go to converters in other cities or export.
The Royal Commission planned a PlasChem Park in Yanbu Industrial City II, announced in 2012, and MEED in 2014 listed engineered plastics, rubber and carbon fibre as target products. Confirm what is built today with the commission. If converters set up, expect demand for plastic pipes and profiles, injection molded parts and masterbatch and additives. Meanwhile the existing plants buy rubber seals and gaskets, rubber hoses, FRP pipes and GRP tanks for corrosive service, plus industrial packaging for export.
For polymer, ask for grade data sheets and lot certificates, and ask whether supply is contract or spot. For FRP and rubber in chemical service, confirm chemical resistance against the actual fluid and temperature, and request the manufacturer's test reports. Export packers should ask about sea freight packing, moisture protection and palletising for the Red Sea route. Describe the item clearly in post a requirement to compare suppliers.
Packaging deserves a separate line in the budget. Resin bags, drums and IBCs leaving Yanbu must survive heat, sun and sea transit, and many exporters standardise on pallet and stretch wrap specifications with the port. Ask your packaging supplier for UV resistant film where product is stored outdoors before shipment.
Yanbu is three places in one. Yanbu Al-Bahr is the older seafront town where most residents live, Yanbu Al-Nakhal is a separate inland area about 47 km away, and Yanbu Al-Sina'iya in the south holds the industrial city. The industrial city is planned and run by the Royal Commission for Jubail and Yanbu, which was established on 21 September 1975 and answers to the Council of Ministers. Its mission is to plan and manage energy-intensive and petrochemical cities, and gas collected from oil operations is meant to feed their plants. In April 2026 Arab News, citing the commission's annual report, put total investment in the Jubail and Yanbu industrial cities above SR1.5 trillion by the end of 2025, and described Yanbu as a refining and downstream processing centre. Wikipedia lists three refineries, a plastics facility and several petrochemical plants in the city.
The expansion known as Yanbu-2 was launched in July 2005 on about 66 square kilometres, with a plan for 34 basic and secondary industries and 224 light industries. Those are 2005 plan figures. On 9 April 2025 Aramco and Sinopec signed a framework agreement to advance engineering studies for a petrochemical expansion at the Yasref refinery, with a 1.8 million tonne a year steam cracker and a 1.5 million tonne aromatics complex. Aramco described it as a study-phase project.
King Fahd Industrial Port is described as the largest port for loading crude oil and petrochemicals on the Red Sea, with terminals for general cargo and containers, bulk cargo and crude oil. The East-West crude pipeline from the Eastern Province ends here. In May 2026 Mawani, a shipping line and SABIC announced the Red Sea Express container service linking the port with Ain Sokhna in Egypt and Aqaba in Jordan, at up to 1,100 TEU. In December 2025 Mawani signed a SAR 29 million logistics agreement with a logistics company for a 120,500 square metre cargo and storage site at a Yanbu port. The airport has domestic flights to Jeddah, Riyadh and Dammam. Medina lies roughly 160 km east by road, so inland deliveries often route through it.
Inside the industrial city, the Royal Commission handles land, utilities and investor services. Port matters go through Mawani and the port operator, customs through ZATCA, and building permits through the municipality. Fire and life safety approvals come from the General Directorate of Civil Defense, and medical products need Saudi Food and Drug Authority authorisation. Confirm the current steps with each body before you commit to a delivery date.
Refining, petrochemicals and port operations buy valves, pumps, coatings, gases, instrumentation and safety gear. Contractors follow plant shutdowns, and about 332,000 residents (2022 census) support housing, clinics and food supply.
