Motors and drives in Saudi Arabia are the induction, explosion-proof, servo and DC motors, variable frequency drives and soft starters that power pumping stations, compressors, HVAC, mining and process plants. This page lists Saudi motor and drive suppliers and covers the SASO 2893 IE3 minimum efficiency rule, SASOEX for hazardous areas, IEEE 519 harmonics, derating for Saudi heat and the factors behind price and delivery.
Jeddah's mechanical, electrical and instrumentation market is shaped by a large, hot, humid city with three MODON industrial estates. Saudipedia lists 1,119, 296 and 714 factories in the First, Second and Third Industrial Cities, each needing power distribution, motor control and process measurement. MODON's August 2024 announcement of a first-phase wastewater plant of 10,000 cubic metres a day in the Second City, plus infrastructure completion worth over SAR 367 million in the Third, adds utility instrumentation on top of factory demand.
Power distribution leads: low voltage switchgear, distribution boards, distribution transformers, circuit breakers and power cables. Factories running pumps, fans and conveyors buy variable frequency drives and motor control centers. Process plants and water works buy pressure transmitters, electromagnetic flow meters and PLC controllers. Lighting for warehouses and yards is a steady line with industrial LED lighting.
Imported electrical products must carry the Saudi Standards, Metrology and Quality Organization conformity route, so ask suppliers for current certificates. Connection to the grid is arranged through the utility, while Civil Defense reviews emergency lighting and fire detection in buildings. Panels built in Jeddah workshops should name the standard they follow and include test reports.
Specify ingress protection and coatings suited to salt air, since enclosures near the coast corrode faster than inland. Ask for derating curves at ambient temperatures typical of a Jeddah summer, because drives and transformers lose capacity in heat. Keep a calibration plan for transmitters and meters, and ask the supplier whether calibration certificates are traceable to a recognised laboratory. For switchgear, request type test reports and short circuit ratings that match the available fault level at your connection point. Also check that spare breakers, fuses and contactors are stocked in the city, because a missing small part can idle a whole line. Read the SASO SABER guide before importing, and compare offers through post a requirement.
Jeddah is the commercial centre of the western Kingdom, and its factories sit in three industrial cities south of the built-up area, all supervised by the Saudi Authority for Industrial Cities and Technology Zones, known as MODON. Saudipedia dates the First Industrial City to 1971, with about twelve million square metres and 1,119 factories, east of Al-Rahmaniyah Market. The Second opened in 2009 west of the Coastal Road, about 30 km from the first. The Third, east of the Coastal Road, is listed with 714 factories and a much larger 80 million square metre footprint, of which 24 million is developed. In August 2024 Argaam reported more than SAR 521 million of new MODON projects there, among them a first-phase wastewater plant of 10,000 cubic metres a day in the Second City and 24 ready-made factories of 350 square metres each in the First.
Jeddah Islamic Port is the main gateway. Wikipedia describes 62 berths in service in 2023 and a share of roughly 65 percent of the Kingdom's seaborne imports, and the port is the western end of the planned Saudi Landbridge. In March 2025 DP World and Mawani inaugurated the expanded South Container Terminal, which lifts capacity from 1.8 to 4 million TEU, and a SAR 900 million, 415,000 square metre logistics park is being built beside it. The airport lies to the north, and trucks carry cargo inland to Mecca, Medina, Taif and Riyadh.
MODON leases plots and ready units. Mawani regulates the port. ZATCA runs customs, and opened an all-in-one customs hall at the port in January 2022. Jeddah Municipality issues trade and building permits, the General Directorate of Civil Defense approves fire and life safety, and the National Water Company runs water and sewage. Confirm current steps on each authority's own platform before contracting.
Construction and fit-out lead because of waterfront and city redevelopment. Food, plastics, packaging, paint and metal plants in the industrial cities buy machinery and spares, while port and logistics operators buy handling gear. Fuel is distributed from Aramco's North Jeddah bulk plant, but refining and heavy petrochemicals sit in other cities.
