Herbicides Suppliers, Saudi Arabia

Herbicides in Saudi Arabia are the weed control products used on wheat, barley and alfalfa under centre pivots, in date and citrus orchards, vegetable farms, landscapes and non-crop sites such as roads, plants and pipelines. This page sets out the main herbicide groups, why hot, dusty conditions and saline well water reduce control, the registration rules under the GCC Pesticides Law as of 2026, and how to choose a registered Saudi supplier.

Which herbicides do Saudi farms and sites use?

Saudi buyers use selective herbicides to take grass and broadleaf weeds out of cereals, fodder and vegetables, non-selective herbicides to clear ground and orchard floors, and residual products to keep industrial and roadside areas bare. Herbicides are the weed control part of agri-inputs in Saudi Arabia, and the GCC Pesticides Law treats them as pesticides.

Herbicides are usually bought with insecticides and fungicides from pesticide and insecticide suppliers in Saudi Arabia, and applied with boom, knapsack and mist sprayers. Clean seed is the first weed control step, so source certified lots from seed and seedling suppliers rather than farm-saved seed carrying weed seeds.

How do Saudi heat, dust and well water affect herbicides?

In Saudi Arabia, the factors that most often reduce herbicide control are dust on weed leaves, minerals in saline well water used for spraying, and weeds hardened by heat and drought. Correct timing and water conditioning address most of them.

  • Spray water. Glyphosate and some other weak acid herbicides bind to calcium, magnesium, sodium and iron in the tank. Research summarised by the University of Wisconsin cites noticeable glyphosate antagonism above about 150 ppm calcium or 300 ppm sodium, and recommends dissolving ammonium sulphate in the water before adding the herbicide. Saline wells in Qassim, Al Ahsa or Wadi Al Dawasir can exceed those levels, so test the water.
  • Dust. Dust settled on leaves, or raised by tractors and pivot towers on sandy tracks, can tie up glyphosate before it enters the leaf. Spray after a pivot pass has washed the canopy and drive slowly on dusty ground.
  • Stressed weeds. Weeds under drought or heat stress build a thicker cuticle and absorb less herbicide. Treat young weeds that are actively growing, and avoid spraying in the hottest part of the day.
  • Resistance. Repeating one mode of action in continuous wheat or alfalfa selects resistant weeds. The HRAC global classification gives each mode of action a group number, so plan rotations by group, not by brand name.
  • Storage and transport. Long hauls from Jeddah or Dammam in summer and hot farm stores shorten shelf life. Check manufacture dates and keep herbicides in a shaded, locked, ventilated store.

Which registrations apply to herbicides in Saudi Arabia?

As of 2026, herbicides in Saudi Arabia fall under the GCC Pesticides Law, which prohibits importing, manufacturing or trading any pesticide without a licence from the competent authority, and requires each product to be registered. MEWA is the competent authority for agricultural pesticides; SFDA covers public health pesticides.

MEWA enforces the law: in 2019 it fined 19 companies and seized illicit, expired and unregistered pesticides in twelve cities, and the law's penalties then included fines up to SAR 200,000. Gulf News reported in December 2025 that a draft update would raise penalties for banned or counterfeit pesticides to up to five years in prison and SAR 10 million in fines; that was a draft, so check its status with MEWA.

How do you choose a herbicide supplier in Saudi Arabia?

Pick a supplier that holds the MEWA registration for the product and the crop you need, can deliver to your region during the spraying window, and gives agronomic advice. Unregistered or repacked herbicide is a legal and crop risk, whatever the price.

  • Registration and chain. Ask for the MEWA registration certificate and, for distributors, the holder's appointment letter. Original sealed packs with Arabic labels only.
  • Regional reach. Pivot farms in Al Jouf, Hail, Tabuk and Qassim need stock close by during the short post-emergence windows in cereals.
  • Agronomy. Look for advice on resistance rotation, water conditioning, crop rotation restrictions and sprayer calibration.
  • Records. Farms supplying exporters or large retailers need spray records with product, batch and pre-harvest interval, so buy from suppliers that document batches.

What affects herbicide price and lead time in Saudi Arabia?

Herbicide prices in Saudi Arabia depend on the active ingredient, original or generic product, concentration and pack size, and demand peaks around cereal and fodder planting in autumn and winter. Registered generics of common actives are usually stocked; newer selectives may come in by order. Compare cost per treated hectare at the label rate, and post your requirement to reach registered Saudi herbicide suppliers.

Frequently Asked Questions — Herbicides

Do herbicides need registration in Saudi Arabia?
Yes. As of 2026, herbicides are pesticides under the GCC Pesticides Law, so in Saudi Arabia they must be registered with MEWA, and importers, formulators and traders need a licence. Agricultural herbicides go through MEWA, while public health pesticides fall under SFDA.
Why does glyphosate work poorly with Saudi well water?
Saudi well water is often hard or saline, and calcium, magnesium and sodium bind glyphosate into forms the leaf absorbs poorly. Testing the spray water and dissolving ammonium sulphate in the tank before adding glyphosate reduces that antagonism and restores weed control.
What penalties apply to unregistered pesticides in Saudi Arabia?
MEWA enforces the GCC Pesticides Law in Saudi Arabia with fines, seizure and destruction of products at the violator cost, and closure of facilities. A draft update reported in December 2025 would raise penalties for banned or counterfeit pesticides; check its status with MEWA.
How do Saudi farms manage herbicide-resistant weeds?
Saudi farms slow herbicide resistance by rotating and mixing herbicides from different HRAC mode of action groups, rotating crops, using clean certified seed and treating weeds while they are small. Repeating one mode of action in continuous wheat or alfalfa selects resistant weeds quickly.
Which herbicides are used for non-crop areas in Saudi Arabia?
Industrial plants, substations, pipelines and road shoulders in Saudi Arabia use non-selective herbicides for existing weeds and residual or total vegetation control products to keep ground bare. Choose products registered for non-crop use and keep residuals away from tree roots and shallow groundwater.
What should I ask a herbicide supplier in Saudi Arabia?
Ask a Saudi herbicide supplier for the MEWA registration certificate, the label crops and doses, the HRAC group, the pre-harvest interval and any rotation restrictions, plus manufacture and expiry dates for the batch. Distributors should show the registration holder appointment letter.
