What is the difference between PE80 and PE100 HDPE pipes?
PE100 has a higher minimum required strength (MRS of 10 MPa versus 8 MPa for PE80), allowing thinner pipe walls at the same pressure rating. This means PE100 pipes use less material, cost less per metre, and have a larger bore for better flow capacity compared to PE80 at the same external diameter and pressure class. PE100 is now the standard specification for most GCC water and gas network projects.
How are large-diameter HDPE pipes joined?
Large-diameter HDPE pipes (110mm and above) are primarily joined by butt fusion welding, where the pipe ends are faced, heated against a hot plate to melting temperature, and pressed together under controlled pressure to form a permanent, full-strength joint. Electrofusion couplers with embedded heating elements are used where butt fusion is not practical. Both methods create leak-free joints that are as strong as the pipe itself.
Can HDPE pipes be used for hot water systems?
Standard HDPE pipes are rated for continuous operation at 20 degrees Celsius and derate at higher temperatures.
