Fuel Cell Systems Suppliers, Saudi Arabia
Fuel cell systems in Saudi Arabia are packaged power units that convert hydrogen into electricity for mobility pilots, remote telecom and pipeline sites, forklifts and continuous on-site power. This page lists Saudi fuel cell suppliers and explains the technologies, the effect of heat, sand and coastal humidity, the IEC 62282, SASO and Civil Defense requirements as of 2026, supplier choice, and cost and delivery drivers.

What is a fuel cell system, and what types do Saudi buyers specify?
A fuel cell system converts the chemical energy in hydrogen directly into DC electricity, with heat and water as by-products, inside a skid or cabinet that includes the stack, air supply, cooling, fuel controls and power electronics. In the Kingdom it belongs to the Saudi hydrogen and fuel cells family, downstream of electrolysers and green hydrogen plants and of the vessels, cylinders and compressors that store hydrogen.
Saudi enquiries tend to come from three directions: utilities and Aramco-linked research centres testing hydrogen mobility, telecom and infrastructure operators looking at remote power, and industrial owners studying continuous power from natural gas. Each points to a different technology.
| Technology | Runs at | Typical Saudi duty | Watch point |
|---|---|---|---|
| PEM | About 80 degrees C | Vehicles, buses, forklifts, standby power for telecom and control rooms | Hydrogen must be very pure; carbon monoxide damages the catalyst |
| Solid oxide | Up to about 1,000 degrees C | Base-load power and heat from natural gas or hydrogen | Long start-up; not for emergency standby |
| Phosphoric acid | Intermediate | Stationary combined heat and power | Accepts reformed fuel better than PEM |
| Molten carbonate | About 650 degrees C | Large plants with internal reforming of natural gas | Continuous duty only |
| Direct methanol | Low | Small portable or off-grid loads | Liquid methanol logistics instead of compressed gas |
The temperatures and fuel tolerances follow the US Department of Energy summary. Where the Kingdom's gas grid reaches the site, high-temperature cells compete with gas engines; where it does not, PEM units on delivered hydrogen compete with diesel.
How do Saudi heat, sand and coastal humidity affect fuel cells?
Saudi sites test fuel cells harder than most reference installations: interior summer heat in Riyadh and Qassim, sandstorms on remote routes, and humid salty air on the Gulf and Red Sea coasts at Dammam, Jubail, Jeddah and Yanbu. Specify the worst case, not the average.
Thermal limits
PEM stacks reject heat at a temperature not far above a Saudi summer afternoon, so dry coolers grow large or output falls. Ask for the rated net output at your site maximum, the curve above it, and whether the cabinet needs air conditioning that itself draws power from the system.
Sand and salt
Cathode air passes through the stack, so filtration decides stack life. Require a staged intake filter rated for sand, the change interval under shamal conditions, and corrosion protection for coastal units. Near refineries in Jubail or Ras Tanura, ask whether chemical filtration for sulphur compounds is needed.
Remote sites
For telecom and pipeline stations far from service centres, the real constraint is hydrogen logistics and site visits. Size on-board hydrogen storage for the outage you plan for, and compare the refill schedule with diesel generator sets or solar plus battery energy storage systems.
Which standards and approvals apply to fuel cell systems in Saudi Arabia?
As of 2026 Saudi specifications cite the IEC 62282 series for fuel cell safety and ISO standards for hydrogen quality and fuelling, applied through owner standards, SASO conformity for regulated imports and Civil Defense review of the installation. Confirm editions in each tender.
| Standard or approval | Scope | Who applies it |
|---|---|---|
| IEC 62282-3-100:2019 | Stationary packaged fuel cell power systems, non-hazardous indoor and outdoor locations | Owners, EPCs, test laboratories |
| IEC 62282-4-101:2022 | Fuel cell systems for electric industrial trucks (forklifts), DC output up to 150 V | Fleet buyers and truck makers |
| ISO 14687 | Hydrogen fuel quality grades | Hydrogen supplier, specified by the owner |
| ISO 19880-1:2020 | Hydrogen fuelling stations | Station projects |
| SASO technical regulations and SABER certificates | Regulated imported products and shipments | SASO and approved conformity bodies |
| Owner engineering standards | Hazardous area classification, materials and vendor approval on Aramco, SABIC or SEC sites | Plant owner |
| Civil Defense approval | Fire safety, ventilation and gas detection for the building or site | General Directorate of Civil Defense |
Note that IEC 62282-3-100 excludes hazardous areas, so a fuel cell inside a classified zone on a hydrocarbon site needs Ex-certified design. The SASO and SABER guide explains product and shipment certificates. Purity and cylinder supply are covered on industrial hydrogen gas for Saudi Arabia.
Where have fuel cells been used in Saudi Arabia?
The best documented Saudi use is mobility testing. Saudi Aramco and Air Products inaugurated the Kingdom's first hydrogen fuelling station in June 2019 at Air Products' Technology Center in Dhahran Techno Valley, to serve an initial fleet of six Toyota Mirai fuel cell cars using Air Products SmartFuel technology, Asharq Al-Awsat reported. Check its current status before planning around it.
Since then most Saudi hydrogen effort has gone into production for export as ammonia rather than fuel cell use at home, so fuel cell buyers today are mainly pilots, research centres and operators testing backup and off-grid power. Hydrogen can also be burned: compare a fuel cell with hydrogen-capable engines and turbines, such as INNIO Jenbacher hydrogen-ready gas engines or Kawasaki hydrogen gas turbines, when the load is large and continuous.
How do you choose a fuel cell supplier in Saudi Arabia?
Choose on service capability in the Kingdom first, then on performance guarantees, then on price. Stacks wear, and a supplier without spares in Riyadh, Dammam or Jeddah turns a fault into weeks of downtime.
- Manufacturer or licensed integrator: the normal route for anything beyond a demonstration; ask for hot-climate references and test reports to IEC 62282.
- Local agent: confirm the authorisation letter, commercial registration and the engineers they have trained.
- Stockist: for filters, sensors and consumables only.
Toshiba produces H2Rex pure hydrogen fuel cells, built up from 100 kW units into systems such as a 500 kW installation announced in 2024; Toshiba states 54 percent peak generation efficiency and offers an optional salt-resistant specification for coastal sites. Warehouse operators should weigh hydrogen forklifts against battery electric forklifts and UPS systems for critical loads. The sourcing guide covers checking agents.
What drives the cost and delivery time of fuel cells in Saudi Arabia?
Cost is set by output, technology, package scope and guarantees, and delivery by factory capacity, certification and shipping into Jeddah Islamic Port or King Abdulaziz Port in Dammam.
- Package boundary: state whether you need inverter, cooling, shelter, hydrogen storage and remote monitoring.
- Fuel: delivered hydrogen and its storage are a running cost that often outweighs the purchase price over the life of a small unit.
- Stack replacement: get the guaranteed hours and the replacement price in the offer.
- Certification and local content: SASO certificates and local content terms in the tender affect timing and who can bid.
