Food grade chemicals in Saudi Arabia are the products a food or beverage factory uses where residues can reach food: CIP cleaners, sanitisers, food grade acids and alkalis, processing aids, culinary steam additives and incidental contact lubricants. This page explains the types, how Saudi heat and dust affect them, which SFDA, GSO and SASO rules apply as of 2026, and how to choose among the Saudi suppliers below.
Bulk petrochemical production belongs to Jubail, and process-chemical buyers are better served from the Jubail chemicals page and Dammam. Khobar's demand is the everyday kind that a commercial city generates: workshop gases, lubricants for fleets and building plant, coatings for salty coastal air, and treatment chemicals for cooling systems. The sector hub at chemicals, lubricants and industrial gases lists the full range.
Coastal humidity and salt make coatings a repeat purchase, so look at anti-corrosion coatings and epoxy coatings for car parks, plant rooms and steel. Towers and hospitals run chillers and cooling towers, which creates steady demand for water treatment chemicals. Workshops and contractors working for Aramco's supply chain buy welding gases and cylinders, so industrial gases and gas cylinders and regulators are common enquiries. Fleet and plant owners order lubricants and oils in drums and totes.
Drums and cylinders usually arrive by road from Dammam and Jubail, and imports clear through King Abdulaziz Port. Hazardous goods need correct labelling, safety data sheets and a carrier permitted to move them. Storage of flammable products is checked by Civil Defense, and Al-Khobar Municipality controls where a depot or shop can operate inside the city, so a storeroom in a commercial building is not always allowed. Confirm with both before you stock.
Ask for the safety data sheet and a batch certificate with the quote. For gases, agree who owns the cylinder, who tests it and how swaps are scheduled, since a missed exchange can stop a site. For coatings, request the applicator's experience on coastal steel and a surface preparation specification, because most failures start with poor preparation. Khobar is the commercial and residential core of the Dammam metropolitan area, so most of its business is offices, trading, hospitality, healthcare and services rather than heavy plant. The 2022 census counted 409,549 people in the city and 658,550 in the governorate, and the city sits between Dammam and Dhahran, the headquarters of Saudi Aramco, about twenty minutes from each. Its streets follow a grid, with older markets around Suwaiket Street and shopping malls elsewhere. The two universities nearby, King Fahd University of Petroleum and Minerals and Prince Mohammad bin Fahd University, add engineering and research demand.
Factories are a short drive away. Dammam First Industrial City is reported to hold 124 factories, and Dammam Second Industrial City spreads over about 6,000 acres along Highway 615 with some 120 operating plants and more under construction. The Dhahran to Jubail Expressway leads north to Jubail Industrial City for large petrochemical and heavy industry. Khobar buyers usually order from the estates and have goods delivered into town.
Khobar once served as Aramco's early port, but commercial shipping later moved to King Abdulaziz Port in Dammam, which handled about 2.04 million TEU of capacity in 2022, and petroleum exports moved to Ras Tanura. A new waterfront port is described as under construction south of the South Corniche. King Fahd International Airport is roughly 50 km away, reached by the Khobar to Dammam Highway (605). The nearest railway station is in Dammam, on a 449 km line through Abqaiq and Hofuf to Riyadh.
The King Fahd Causeway to Bahrain opened on 25 November 1986 and is about 25 km long. After works completed in June 2020 it reopened for commercial transit traffic, with new gates on the Saudi side. Rules for trucks change, so ask your forwarder for the current customs procedure before you plan a Bahrain leg.
Building and municipal matters fall under Al-Khobar Municipality, one of five municipalities in the Eastern Province Amana, which is headquartered in Dammam and reports to the Ministry of Municipalities and Housing. Factory land and ready units in the industrial cities come through MODON. Private hospitals work with the Ministry of Health, and fire and life safety approvals come from Civil Defense. Customs clearance is handled by ZATCA at the port or border. Check each authority's own platform for the current steps.
Oil and gas contractors and engineering firms keep offices here to be near Aramco. Hospitals, malls, hotels and towers need cooling, security, cleaning and maintenance. The governorate reports eight hospitals with 2,809 beds, and private hospital capacity has kept growing, so medical supply is a steady buyer.
