Ultrasonic flow meters measure flow velocity by transmitting ultrasonic pulses through the flowing medium and analysing the difference in transit time between upstream and downstream directions. This technology serves a broad range of GCC applications including crude oil metering, natural gas custody transfer, district cooling water measurement, and wastewater monitoring.
Two main types serve different applications: transit-time ultrasonic meters work best with clean, single-phase liquids and gases, while Doppler meters measure fluids containing suspended particles or bubbles that reflect the ultrasonic signal. Clamp-on transit-time meters mount externally on the pipe surface, enabling flow measurement without cutting into the pipeline, which is invaluable for retrofit applications and temporary measurements in operating GCC plants.
Inline (wetted) ultrasonic meters with multiple acoustic paths (typically 4 or more for custody-grade applications) deliver accuracy of 0.15 to 0.5 percent of reading, suitable for fiscal metering of crude oil, refined products, and natural gas in ADNOC, Saudi Aramco, and utility applications. Clamp-on meters typically achieve 1 to 3 percent accuracy, adequate for process control, energy management, and check metering.
Procurement managers should define the application requirements clearly: custody transfer and fiscal metering demand multi-path inline meters with AGA-9 (gas) or API MPMS Ch. 5.8 (liquid) compliance, while process monitoring and energy audits can use more economical clamp-on or single-path inline meters. Specify the pipe material, wall thickness, liner presence, and fluid properties accurately when ordering clamp-on meters, as transducer selection depends on these parameters.
