What are temperature instruments, and which types are specified in Saudi Arabia?

Temperature instruments measure process and storage temperatures and pass the value to an operator, an alarm or a control loop: thermocouples, resistance thermometers, transmitters, thermowells, controllers, and infrared thermometers and cameras. In Saudi Arabia they belong to the broader instrumentation and process control category for Saudi Arabia, and the bulk of demand comes from refineries and petrochemical complexes in Jubail, Yanbu and Ras Tanura, power and desalination plants, food factories, and the pharmaceutical and grocery cold chain.

A Saudi instrument index treats each tag as an assembly. The sensing element, its thermowell, the transmitter and the cable are specified together, and the operator's project specification usually decides the details before a buyer compares quotes.

Alongside these, Saudi buyers order bimetal dial thermometers for local indication on pumps and exchangers, and USB or wireless data loggers for refrigerated trucks, cold rooms and pharmacy stores.

How do Saudi heat, dust and humidity affect temperature instruments?

The two Saudi coasts and the interior stress instruments differently. Jubail and Dammam combine high summer temperatures with humid, saline air; Riyadh and the central plants are hotter and drier, with fine dust; Jeddah, Rabigh and Yanbu sit on the humid Red Sea coast.

  • Solar load on electronics. Transmitter heads on open pipe racks gain heat from direct sun. Compare the electronics' rated ambient limit with that solar-loaded case and specify sunshades for exposed tags, a common line in Saudi specifications.
  • Dust ingress. Fine inland dust gets into poorly sealed heads and terminal boxes. Ask for the IP rating of the complete assembly, including the cable gland, and keep spare O-rings for cover seals.
  • Coastal corrosion. Near the Gulf and Red Sea, 316 stainless heads and fittings are the minimum; seawater cooling and brine service in desalination often call for duplex, super duplex or titanium thermowells.
  • Sour and high-pressure service. Thermowells in sour gas or crude service must follow the plant's material and hardness rules, so the thermowell supplier needs the full process data, not just the line size.
  • Infrared in the field. Dust on optics and reflected sunlight give false readings. Clean lenses, check emissivity against a contact probe, and avoid midday surveys of outdoor equipment.

Thermowell failure is the most serious risk on a temperature point, because a broken well opens the process to atmosphere. ASME PTC 19.3 TW gives the calculation for flow-induced vibration. After a thermowell broke at Japan's Monju reactor in 1995 through vibration parallel to the flow, the 2010 edition added in-line resonance to the method, and the 2016 edition set stricter conditions for running through it, including that the medium is a gas. Ask for the calculation sheet with each quotation for high-velocity lines and let the plant's process engineer check it.

Which approvals and standards apply to temperature instruments in Saudi Arabia?

As of 2026, approvals for temperature instruments in Saudi Arabia depend on use: SASO and SABER for import conformity, IECEx-based recognition for some hazardous-area items, SFDA rules for food and medicines, and the operator's vendor approval on industrial projects.

SASO and SABER. From 1 November 2021 SASO required an IECEE/IECEx recognition certificate (SIRC) for a listed set of hazardous-area products: junction and control boxes with cable entries, gas detectors, plugs and connectors, electric pumps and fixed linear lighting. Temperature transmitters were not on that published list, but the list is updated in SABER, so check the HS code before you ship. The wider certificate process is explained in our guide to SASO and SABER certificates for industrial equipment.

Food cold chain. SFDA's General Requirements for Food Transport set chilled transport between 1.5 and 10°C depending on the product and frozen at minus 18°C or colder. Refrigerated containers must carry a thermometer with its dial outside the cargo space, giving a reading representative of the load, and readings must be recorded continuously and kept as a reference. The guide also asks for humidity measuring instruments in refrigerated containers. That is a direct specification for in-cab displays, probes and data loggers on Saudi fleets.

Medicines. SFDA announced in 2011 that drug transporters must use refrigerated containers with temperature indicators that record conditions during transit, and it publishes a good storage and distribution practice guideline for pharmaceuticals. Confirm the current version of that guideline with SFDA before you validate a warehouse or fleet.

Calibration. SAAC is the Saudi accreditation body and is listed by ILAC as a signatory for calibration under ISO/IEC 17025. Ask that calibration certificates for audit-facing sensors carry the SAAC mark or another ILAC MRA signatory's. Reference probes, dry blocks and baths for in-house checks are listed under calibration equipment in Saudi Arabia.

Who supplies temperature instruments in Saudi Arabia?

Most engineered temperature points reach Saudi projects through the manufacturer's Saudi entity or an authorised local partner, because Aramco and SABIC projects expect local support, in-Kingdom content and approved manufacturers. Standard sensors, handheld infrared thermometers and data loggers are widely stocked in Riyadh, Jeddah and Dammam.

  • WIKA: thermocouples, RTDs, thermowells and dial thermometers, with a published thermowell calculation tool.
  • Endress+Hauser: temperature assemblies and transmitters sold with its wider process instrument range.
  • Emerson (Rosemount): temperature transmitters and sensor assemblies for refinery and petrochemical service.
  • Yokogawa: temperature transmitters often supplied with its DCS packages.
  • Eurotherm: process temperature controllers, recorders and SCR power controllers for heating systems.
  • Ashcroft: bimetal and gas-actuated thermometers for local indication.

Stock versus factory build. Catalogue sensors and controllers can often be delivered from Kingdom stock. Assemblies built to a tag (insertion length, flange rating, alloy thermowell, Ex-certified head, special calibration) are usually made to order abroad and cleared through King Abdulaziz Port in Dammam, Jeddah Islamic Port or Jubail Commercial Port, with SABER clearance where the product needs it. Our guide to finding and vetting industrial suppliers in Saudi Arabia and the UAE covers checking that a distributor is authorised.

Temperature points rarely stand alone. They share manifolds and datasheets with pressure instruments, sit next to analysers in process plants, and report to the plant control system, so coordinate the transmitter protocol with the DCS vendor. For quotes on a full instrument list, post your requirement with range, process connection, material and hazardous area class per tag.

What affects the price and lead time of temperature instruments in Saudi Arabia?

The cost of a temperature point in Saudi Arabia is set by its thermowell, its certification and its paperwork more than by the sensor type. A catalogue Pt100 with a threaded stainless well is cheap and quick; a flanged alloy assembly for an Aramco project is a long-lead engineered item.

  • Materials. Duplex, Inconel, Hastelloy or titanium thermowells and sheaths, and sour service requirements, raise cost and extend delivery.
  • Vendor approval and documentation. Approved manufacturer lists, inspection and test plans, third-party inspection, material certificates and data books all add time before dispatch.
  • Hazardous area certification. Ex d or Ex i transmitters and heads limit the available variants and may need SABER and SIRC paperwork.
  • Calibration. Accredited multi-point calibration and sensor-transmitter matching add cost but cut site commissioning time.
  • Local content. Some Saudi tenders score in-Kingdom manufacturing or assembly, which can favour suppliers who build assemblies locally.

Thermal cameras price on detector size and software features, and are usually stocked. Ask each supplier to confirm lead time per tag in writing, because factory and inspection queues change through the year.

Frequently Asked Questions — Temperature Instruments

Do temperature instruments need a SASO certificate in Saudi Arabia?
Regulated products entering Saudi Arabia need SABER certificates, and since November 2021 SASO has required an IECEx-based recognition certificate (SIRC) for a listed set of hazardous-area products. Temperature transmitters were not on the published list we checked, but the list changes, so check the HS code in SABER as of 2026.
What temperatures does SFDA require for refrigerated food transport?
SFDA's General Requirements for Food Transport set chilled food between 1.5 and 10°C depending on the product and frozen food at minus 18°C or colder. Containers need a thermometer readable from outside the cargo space, and readings must be recorded continuously and kept as a reference.
Which thermocouple type is used most in Saudi refineries and petrochemical plants?
Type K is the general-purpose choice for high temperatures in Saudi plants, with Type N chosen where long-term stability matters, and noble-metal types R, S or B for the hottest furnace points. All letter types are defined in IEC 60584-1, and the project specification normally fixes the type and tolerance class.
Why does a thermowell need an ASME PTC 19.3 TW calculation?
Flow past a thermowell can make it resonate and fail, opening the process to atmosphere. ASME PTC 19.3 TW sets out how to check wake frequency and stress, including in-line resonance added after the 1995 Monju failure. Saudi operators expect the calculation sheet for thermowells on high-velocity lines.
Who accredits calibration labs for temperature sensors in Saudi Arabia?
The Saudi Accreditation Center (SAAC) accredits laboratories in the Kingdom and has been an ILAC MRA signatory for calibration under ISO/IEC 17025 since 2021. Calibration certificates for food, pharmaceutical and custody points should carry SAAC accreditation or that of another ILAC MRA signatory.
Do medicine distributors in Saudi Arabia need temperature monitoring?
Yes. SFDA requires transporters of drugs, herbal and veterinary products to use refrigerated containers fitted with temperature indicators that record conditions in transit, and it publishes a good storage and distribution practice guideline. Confirm the current guideline version with SFDA before validating a warehouse or fleet.
How long do engineered temperature assemblies take to reach Saudi projects?
Catalogue sensors and controllers are often in Kingdom stock, but assemblies built to a tag, with alloy thermowells, Ex heads, accredited calibration and Aramco or SABIC documentation, are usually made abroad and cleared through SABER. Ask each supplier to confirm lead time per tag in writing.
