Passive components (resistors, capacitors, inductors, filters and supercapacitors) control and store energy in circuits without amplifying it. In the Kingdom they make up the bulk of line items in Saudi electronic component orders, bought by electronics manufacturers in Riyadh and Dammam industrial cities, board assemblers, drive and UPS service centres, telecom integrators and maintenance departments at Saudi Aramco, SEC and petrochemical plants. Rules below were reviewed in October 2026.

Which passive components do Saudi buyers need, and what are they for?

Passive components resist, store or filter energy; they cannot switch or amplify like a transistor. Saudi purchases centre on chip resistors, capacitors of several technologies, inductors and EMI filters, and supercapacitors, almost always quoted against an exact part number.

ComponentSaudi applicationsWhat to state on the RFQ
Chip resistors, thick and thin filmInstrument, protection relay and controller boards; current shuntsResistance, tolerance, wattage, size code, TCR, anti-sulfur version for gas plants
Ceramic chip capacitors (MLCC)Decoupling and filtering on all electronicsCapacitance, rated voltage, dielectric, size, flexible termination
Aluminium electrolytic, polymer and hybrid capacitorsDrive DC buses, UPS, switch-mode suppliesEndurance hours at upper category temperature, ripple current, ESR

On the board, passives work beside chips and integrated circuits and are placed during contract PCB assembly in Saudi Arabia. Panel builders use them in suppression networks for relay and contactor coils, and the same boards carry board terminals and connectors. Bigger capacitor banks and filters sit inside power electronics equipment.

How do Saudi heat, dust and sulfur affect passive components?

In Saudi service, temperature decides capacitor life and corrosive air decides resistor life. Equipment rooms in Riyadh summers, outdoor kiosks along pipelines and sulfur-laden air at Eastern Province gas plants all shorten passive component life unless the parts and enclosures are chosen for them.

Capacitors age with heat

Aluminium electrolytic capacitors follow what ROHM calls the "10-degree rule", derived from the Arrhenius relationship: life roughly halves for each 10 °C increase and doubles for each 10 °C decrease. Ripple current heats the capacitor from inside because of its relatively high ESR. Saudi maintenance teams should:

  1. Specify 105 °C or higher endurance ratings for drives, UPS and supplies, and work out life at actual internal temperature including ripple.
  2. Plan capacitor replacement in aging VFDs and UPS units rather than waiting for failure.
  3. Keep enclosure cooling and filters clean; dust-clogged filters raise internal temperature.

Sulfur and resistor failure

Thick film chip resistors use silver electrodes that can react with sulfur compounds and go open circuit. Panasonic designs anti-sulfurated resistors, such as the ERJ-UP6 series, to avoid an open circuit caused by sulfide disconnection, and positions them for environments exposed to oil, gas or polluted soil. Boards in instruments and controls at Abqaiq, Ras Tanura or Jubail are good candidates for anti-sulfur grades plus conformal coating.

Mechanical stress on ceramic capacitors

Ceramic chip capacitors crack when a board flexes after soldering, during depanelling, connector insertion or screw mounting, according to TDK. TDK says its soft-termination MLCCs survive 5 mm of board deflection over 90 mm, with solder joints about 2.5 times stronger. Saudi assemblers can specify soft termination for boards fixed in vibrating plant. Storage of moisture-sensitive parts in humid Jeddah and Dammam is covered on the electronic components family page.

Which standards and regulations apply to passive components in Saudi Arabia?

Passive parts are specified to IEC standards and automotive qualification, and the equipment and spare parts that contain them fall under SASO's RoHS technical regulation. The table reflects the position as of October 2026; confirm details with SASO for your product.

RequirementScopeBody
IEC 60384-14X and Y capacitors for EMI suppression connected to supply mains up to 1,000 V AC and 100 HzIEC
IEC 60115-8Sectional specification for surface mount fixed resistorsIEC
AEC-Q200Stress test qualification declared for passive partsAutomotive Electronics Council
SASO Technical Regulation for Restriction of Hazardous Substances in EEE, Version 2 (Official Gazette, 29 July 2022)Equipment up to 1,000 V AC or 1,500 V DC and its spare partsSASO

The SASO regulation caps lead, mercury, hexavalent chromium, PBB and PBDE at 0.1% and cadmium at 0.01% by weight in homogeneous materials. Its exemption list is directly relevant to passives: it exempts lead in dielectric ceramic of capacitors rated 125 V AC or 250 V DC and above, and lead in glass or ceramic of other components such as piezoelectric devices. Ask suppliers which exemption, if any, a part relies on, and keep their declarations in the technical file. Saudi RoHS also covers spare parts, so replacement capacitors for drives and UPS need the same evidence. The guide to SASO and SABER certificates explains the import process.

Who supplies passive components in Saudi Arabia, and what affects cost?

Saudi buyers source passives from international franchised distributors that ship into the Kingdom, local electronics stockists and, for obsolete parts, independent brokers. Franchised supply carries factory traceability; brokered capacitors carry a higher risk of recycled or remarked stock.

Makers carried here include Panasonic (aluminium electrolytic, polymer, hybrid and film capacitors, thick and thin film resistors including anti-sulfur types, and power inductors) and Eaton (EDLC supercapacitors and power magnetics from its electronics division). Resistor, MLCC and inductor lines from other makers are widely available through franchised distributors.

  • Volume and packaging: reels are much cheaper per piece than cut tape.
  • Special grades: anti-sulfur, AEC-Q200, high-temperature and safety-certified parts carry premiums.
  • Supply cycles: capacitor and MLCC lead times lengthen when the market tightens.
  • Logistics and paperwork: courier shipments into Riyadh and Dammam are fast; consolidated freight via King Abdulaziz Port or Jeddah Islamic Port and RoHS documentation take longer.

Frequently Asked Questions — Passive Components

Which passive components are most bought in Saudi Arabia?
Saudi buyers mostly order chip resistors, ceramic MLCCs, aluminium electrolytic and polymer capacitors, film and X/Y safety capacitors, inductors and chokes, and supercapacitors. They go into instrument boards, drives, UPS systems and telecom equipment, and are usually quoted by exact manufacturer part number.
Why do capacitors fail early in Saudi equipment rooms?
Capacitors fail early in hot Saudi equipment rooms because electrolytic capacitor life roughly halves for each 10 °C rise in temperature, the 10-degree rule ROHM describes. Ripple current adds internal heat, so drives and UPS units in poorly cooled rooms need capacitor replacement sooner.
Does Saudi RoHS exempt lead in ceramic capacitors?
Yes. The SASO RoHS technical regulation, Version 2 of 2022, exempts lead in dielectric ceramic of capacitors rated 125 V AC or 250 V DC and above. Saudi buyers should still ask suppliers to state which exemption a part relies on in their declaration.
Should boards at Saudi gas plants use anti-sulfur resistors?
Boards at Saudi gas plants and refineries are good candidates for anti-sulfur resistors, because sulfur compounds can attack the silver electrodes of standard thick film resistors and cause open circuits. Panasonic makes anti-sulfurated series for environments exposed to oil and gas.
What is IEC 60384-14 used for in Saudi Arabia?
IEC 60384-14 is the standard for X and Y capacitors used for EMI suppression across supply mains up to 1,000 V AC. Saudi panel builders and repair shops use it to confirm that replacement safety capacitors carry the same class and subclass approval as the originals.
Does Saudi RoHS cover replacement capacitors and spare parts?
Saudi RoHS covers spare parts as well as finished electrical and electronic equipment up to 1,000 V AC or 1,500 V DC. Replacement capacitors and resistors for Saudi drives and UPS repairs should therefore come with manufacturer RoHS declarations for the technical file.
