Labeling & Date Coding Suppliers, Saudi Arabia
Labelling and date coding in Saudi Arabia is the equipment that prints production and expiry dates, lot codes and Arabic label content on food packs so they meet SFDA rules. This page sets out what SFDA.FD/GSO 9 and the SFDA shelf life standards expect on a pack as of 2026, how to match a printer to bottles, film, cartons and meat trays, and which brands Saudi suppliers carry.

What does labelling and date coding cover in a Saudi food factory?
In a Saudi food factory, labelling and date coding is the station that turns a filled pack into a saleable one: it adds the two dates, the lot code and the label the SFDA inspector will read. It is one of the machine types within food packaging equipment for Saudi plants.
For the printers themselves (continuous inkjet, thermal inkjet, laser, thermal transfer), see coding and marking machines in Saudi Arabia; for applicators that put printed labels on bottles, jars and cartons, see labelling machines in Saudi Arabia. This page covers what a Saudi food pack has to carry and how that drives the choice of printer on each line.
Which SFDA rules decide what a food pack must carry?
SFDA points food producers to three regulations for labels: SFDA.FD/GSO 9 for prepackaged food labels, SFDA.FD/GSO 2233 for nutrition information and SFDA.FD 2333 for health and nutrition claims. For shelf life it names SFDA.FD 150-1 (mandatory expiration dates) and SFDA.FD/GSO 150-2 (voluntary expiration dates), as listed on its FAQ pages in 2026.
The Gulf text behind SFDA.FD/GSO 9 is GSO 9:2022, approved in October 2022 and amended in April 2025. Its earlier 2013 English text contains the date rules that shape Saudi coding layouts. Confirm the current wording before you finalise a pack, as the 2022 edition may differ in detail:
- Both a production date and an expiry date are required. Day, month and year for shelf lives under three months; month and year is allowed above three months.
- The producer prints, stamps, engraves or embosses the dates in indelible ink directly on the package or original label. Date stickers are not permitted.
- Only one production date and one expiry date per pack, and neither may be deleted or altered. Plan how misprinted packs are pulled and repacked.
- Each container carries a code or clear marking that identifies the factory and lot.
- Label text is in Arabic; any second language must say the same thing.
- Labels must resist removal, and ink on a label touching the food must not migrate.
Shelf life limits matter for meat and poultry plants. The Gulf standard GSO 150-1 was amended in October 2022 so that vacuum or modified atmosphere packed beef, buffalo, camel and deer meat runs 120 days from slaughter and mutton and goat 90 days, according to a ChemLinked summary. Saudi Arabia applies its own SFDA.FD 150-1, so check whether SFDA has adopted the same limits before setting the coder's date logic, which for meat has to count from the slaughter date.
How do you match a printer to a Saudi food pack?
Match the printer to the surface being marked and the machine it sits on. Saudi product mixes such as dates, tahini, rice, chilled chicken and long-life dairy each favour a different method.
| Pack | Code content | Typical printer | Saudi line check |
|---|---|---|---|
| Laban, juice and water bottles | Two dates and lot on cap or neck | Continuous inkjet or laser | Adhesion on sweating bottles at Jeddah and Dammam plants |
| Rice, spice, coffee and cardamom pouches | Dates and lot on the film | Thermal transfer overprinter on the VFFS or flow wrapper | Print window in artwork, ribbon use per shift |
| Date boxes and gift cartons | Dates, lot and a barcode | Thermal inkjet or laser on the carton | Code position that survives the sleeve or overwrap |
| Chilled chicken and meat trays | Dates, weight, price, barcode, Arabic name | Weigh-price labeller or thermal transfer on the lid | Slaughter date feed and label grip on cold trays |
| Tahini, ghee and paste jars | Dates and lot on lid or label | Inkjet on the cap or a pre-printed label coded in line | Oily surfaces, code legibility after handling |
| Shipping cases | Case dates and GS1-128 label | Large character inkjet or print-and-apply | Case code matches the unit codes |
Ask every bidder to print your real Arabic layout, at your real character height, on your real packaging. Arabic script is connected and right-to-left, and font rendering varies between printers. Set dates and lots centrally from the batch record so operators do not key them in at each machine.
How do Saudi climate conditions affect date codes?
Codes and labels fail in Saudi plants mostly through moisture, dust and heat around the pack rather than printer faults. Coastal plants fight condensation; inland plants in Riyadh, Qassim and Sudair fight dust.
- On the Red Sea and Gulf coasts, cold-filled bottles and chilled trays sweat; dry the print area before coding and choose label adhesives tested on wet, cold surfaces.
- Inland, fine dust settles on printheads and sensors; keep coders in enclosures with filtered air and clean them on a schedule.
- Keep labels, ribbons and inks in the conditioned store; a summer warehouse is too hot for many adhesives and ribbon coatings.
- Check codes after a trip in a refrigerated truck, where condensation and rubbing can wipe a weak code.
Which approvals apply to food labels and coding in Saudi Arabia?
As of 2026, Saudi Arabia does not license the coder; it regulates the label and the factory. SFDA reviews label compliance during factory licensing, product registration and inspections.
| Requirement | Effect on the pack | Authority or reference |
|---|---|---|
| SFDA.FD/GSO 9 | Mandatory label content, Arabic, dates | SFDA, based on GSO 9:2022 |
| SFDA.FD/GSO 2233 | Nutrition information panel | SFDA |
| SFDA.FD 2333 | Health and nutrition claims on the label | SFDA |
| SFDA.FD 150-1 and SFDA.FD/GSO 150-2 | Mandatory and voluntary expiration periods | SFDA |
| Halal certification | Halal claims and logos on the label | Halal certification body; GSO 2055-1:2015 Halal products, general requirements |
SFDA's FAQ notes that the nutrition labelling regulation excludes single-ingredient foods such as rice, tea, coffee or sugar, so a rice or coffee packer's coding and label layout can be simpler than a biscuit maker's. Confirm exemptions for your product with SFDA before printing.
Who supplies labelling and date coding equipment in Saudi Arabia?
Saudi plants buy coders and labellers through authorised agents with offices and stock in Riyadh, Jeddah and Dammam, and through line builders who fit them to fillers and wrappers. Brands carried include:
- Videojet, Domino and Markem-Imaje for continuous inkjet, thermal inkjet, laser, thermal transfer and print-and-apply.
- Linx for continuous inkjet and thermal transfer coders on smaller lines.
- Espera and Bizerba for weigh-price labelling of poultry, meat and produce.
- Multivac for labelling and marking modules on its packaging lines.
Coders are often specified with the machine that forms the pack: a thermal transfer printer on filling and sealing machines for pouches, or a weigh-price labeller after MAP tray sealers for chicken and meat. Bundles and multipacks leaving a shrink wrapping machine need their own case code, and a checkweigher or code-reading camera rejects packs without a legible date. Ask about consumables stock in the Kingdom and SABER paperwork for imported units; the GCC food plant packaging machinery guide covers acceptance tests. To get several quotes on one brief, post your requirement with photos of your packs and line speed.
What drives cost and delivery time?
Consumables, integration and the number of code points drive lifetime cost more than the printer price. A stocked coder can be running within days; weigh-price labelling lines and vision-checked coding are configured to your packs, shipped through Jeddah Islamic Port or King Abdulaziz Port in Dammam, cleared through SABER and trialled on site.
