Argon Suppliers, Saudi Arabia
Argon in Saudi Arabia is supplied in cylinders and as liquid to fabrication yards, pipe shops, heat treatment plants and laboratories that need an inert shielding or purge gas. This page lists Saudi argon suppliers and explains purity grades, ISO 14175 and AWS A5.32, specifying argon for code welding on owner projects, safe storage in heat, the SASO rules that apply as of 2026, and cost drivers.

What is argon and how is it used in Saudi Arabia?
Argon is an inert atmospheric gas that Saudi buyers use mostly for shielding and backing in welding, plus heat treatment, metal processing and laboratory instruments. It is listed in the Saudi industrial gases family, where all gases and supply routes are compared; this page goes into argon grades, specifying it for code welding, cylinders versus liquid, and the documents to request.
Argon grades are written as numbers: 4.6 is 99.996% pure and 5.0 is 99.999%. Welding argon is classified under ISO 14175, and pure argon is class I1. Linde's conformity certificate for Argon 5.0, for example, cites ISO 14175 I1 and limits nitrogen to 5 ppm, oxygen to 2 ppm, moisture to 0.2 ppm and hydrocarbons to 3 ppm. Air Liquide says its ARCAL range complies with ISO 14175 and AWS A5.32, with ARCAL Prime at 99.999% argon for TIG, plasma and aluminium MIG welding and for root shielding.
| Argon supply | Saudi use | What to specify |
|---|---|---|
| Cylinder argon for welding | TIG welding on stainless pipe spools, tanks and food and pharma equipment | ISO 14175 class, grade 4.6 or 5.0, cylinder size |
| Purge and backing argon | Root protection on stainless, duplex and nickel alloy piping for refineries, petrochemical and desalination plants | Purity, flow, root oxygen target from the procedure |
| Argon-based blends | MAG welding of structural steel and stainless with CO2 or oxygen additions | ISO 14175 mixture class named in the WPS |
| Liquid argon bulk | Large fabrication yards in Jubail, Dammam and Yanbu, heat treatment and metal plants | Tank and vaporiser size, telemetry, delivery terms |
| High-purity argon | Laboratories, analysers, research centres | Certificate of analysis, clean regulator, valve outlet |
Ready-made argon and CO2 blends are covered on specialty gas mixtures in Saudi Arabia, and straight CO2 on carbon dioxide supply in Saudi Arabia. Some contractors ask about nitrogen as a cheaper purge gas; acceptability depends on alloy and procedure, so read nitrogen gas and liquid nitrogen and ask your welding engineer first.
How do you specify argon for code welding in Saudi Arabia?
Specify argon by the ISO 14175 class and grade written in the welding procedure specification, and keep the certificate with the weld records. On Saudi Aramco, SABIC and other owner projects the WPS defines the shielding and backing gas, and a change of gas may trigger a procedure review, so agree any switch with the welding engineer and inspector.
- TIG: pure argon is standard on TIG welding machines in Saudi Arabia for stainless steel, aluminium and root passes.
- MIG on aluminium: pure argon or argon-helium on MIG welding machines for aluminium and copper alloys.
- Purging spools: plan dams, vents and purge time so the root reaches the oxygen level set in the procedure. Most argon waste on Saudi shop floors comes from leaking purge setups.
- Filler metals: match wires and rods to the alloy; see welding consumables in the Kingdom.
How do Saudi heat, sand and humidity affect argon?
Argon does not react or degrade with heat, but its packaging and the people around it are affected. Cylinder pressure climbs with temperature, so in Riyadh or Qassim summers keep cylinders out of direct sun, upright and chained, in a ventilated store. Because argon is heavier than air and odourless, it can collect in tanks, pits and purged spools; test oxygen before entry and keep purge vents outside enclosed spaces.
On the Gulf and Red Sea coasts, moist air entering damaged hoses causes weld porosity, so replace cracked hoses and tighten fittings. Sand in a valve outlet damages regulator seats; keep caps fitted until use. For liquid argon tanks, summer heat raises boil-off, so match tank size and delivery frequency to real demand.
Which standards and approvals apply to argon in Saudi Arabia?
As of 2026, argon quality in Saudi Arabia is governed by ISO and AWS gas specifications and by owner project specifications. Regulators and cylinder valves can fall under SASO's regulation for gas-operated devices, which covers gas pressure regulators and gas cylinder valves; that regulation focuses on LPG equipment, so confirm scope for argon hardware with SASO.
| Requirement | Scope | Authority |
|---|---|---|
| ISO 14175 | Classification of welding gases; pure argon is class I1 | ISO, certified by the gas company |
| AWS A5.32 | Shielding gas specification on AWS and ASME code work | American Welding Society |
| SASO technical regulation for gas-operated devices | Gas pressure regulators, gas supply hoses and cylinder valves, mandatory from April 2017 | SASO, SABER certificates for imports |
| Owner specifications and WPS | Gas type and backing method per weld, supplier registration | Saudi Aramco, SABIC and EPC contractors |
If you import regulators or flowmeters directly, our SASO and SABER certificate guide explains the process. Regulators and flowmeters are also listed under gas cylinders and regulators for Saudi buyers.
Who supplies argon in Saudi Arabia and what drives price?
Saudi argon is supplied by gas companies with air separation plants and by welding distributors that exchange cylinders. Abdullah Hashim Industrial Gases and Equipment (AHG) lists packaged, bulk and on-site gas supply, and Linde said in September 2025 that Airtec runs air separation units in Saudi Arabia; the family page covers the wider market. Cost is driven by:
- Supply mode: cylinders cost more per cubic metre than liquid bulk at steady demand.
- Grade and certificates: 5.0 and laboratory grades cost more.
- Purge losses: leaking dams can use more argon than welding.
- Distance: sites far from Jubail, Dammam, Riyadh or Jeddah pay more for delivery.
Cylinders are usually delivered within days in the main cities; bulk tanks need a survey, foundation and installation. Our supplier sourcing guide for the UAE and Saudi Arabia covers due diligence. To compare offers, post your argon requirement with grade, volume and site city.
