Radar level transmitters use microwave pulses (guided wave or free-space) to measure the distance from the sensor to the liquid or solid surface, calculating level by subtracting this distance from the known tank height. This non-contact technology is unaffected by temperature, pressure, density, vapour, and condensation, making it the most reliable level measurement option for demanding GCC applications.
Two radar technologies serve different applications: non-contact (free-space) radar transmits through the vapour space and is preferred for large storage tanks, aggressive chemical vessels, and applications where the sensor must not contact the product. Guided wave radar (GWR) uses a probe immersed in the product, offering superior performance in small tanks, interface measurement (oil-water), and vessels with internal obstructions, turbulence, or heavy foam.
Key specifications include operating frequency (6 GHz, 26 GHz, or 80 GHz; higher frequencies provide narrower beam angles and better performance in small nozzles and tanks with obstructions), accuracy (typically 1 to 3 mm for custody transfer, 5 to 15 mm for process control), process temperature and pressure ratings, antenna type and material, and hazardous area certification.
GCC applications include crude oil storage tank gauging (ADNOC and Saudi Aramco tank farms), LPG and LNG sphere level monitoring, refinery column level control, chemical reactor level measurement, desalination plant tank inventory, and water reservoir monitoring.
