Desalting equipment is the first process unit encountered by crude oil entering any refinery in the UAE and Saudi Arabia, performing the critical function of reducing the salt content (primarily sodium, calcium, and magnesium chlorides) to below 1 PTB (pound per thousand barrels) and water content to below 0.3% before the crude reaches the atmospheric distillation column. Without effective desalting, chloride salts hydrolyze in the distillation column overhead to form hydrochloric acid, causing severe corrosion that can shut down a refinery.
The standard desalting process uses electrostatic coalescence: crude oil is mixed with 3-10% wash water, then enters a horizontal vessel containing an electrostatic grid that promotes the coalescence of small water droplets (carrying dissolved salts) into larger droplets that settle and are removed. Key equipment includes the desalter vessel (designed per ASME VIII), the electrostatic grid system (AC, DC, or dual-polarity), the mix valve for crude-water mixing, chemical injection systems (demulsifiers and caustic), and the interface level control system. Specifications include crude throughput capacity, operating temperature (typically 120-150 degrees Celsius), salt removal efficiency (greater than 95%), and electrical system voltage (typically 15-35 kV).
Buyers should evaluate desalter technology providers (AGAR-Cameron, Petreco-Schlumberger, Natco-Exterran) based on their experience with the specific crude slate being processed. Arabian crude grades vary in emulsion stability, asphaltene content, and solids loading, all of which affect desalter performance. Process guarantees should specify salt removal efficiency and outlet water-in-oil content. Lead times for desalter vessels and electrostatic systems are typically 20-30 weeks. Chemical supply contracts for demulsifiers should be established with local suppliers who can provide ongoing optimization support and maintain inventories in the region.
